COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University men’s basketball team shocked the rest of the Big Ten Conference by taking the Indiana Hoosiers down to the wire, but a turnover with nine seconds remaining led to a 74-72 OSU loss in St. John Arena Thursday night. Ohio State tied the game at 72 on a Jason Singleton lay-up with :66 seconds remaining. The Buckeyes made a defensive stop after an IU timeout, then called a timeout of their own with :29 seconds remaining. OSU point guard Carlos Davis threw an errant pass that was picked off by IU’s Luke Recker, however, with nine ticks left on the clock. Recker then drove to the hole untouched for the game-winning slam dunk.
Ohio State falls to 7-19 overall and 0-13 in the Big Ten. Indiana now stands 18-7 overall and 9-4 in the conference. The two teams battled back-and-forth the entire night. Ohio State came out strong, storming to a 13-4 lead on a Singleton free throw. A three-pointer by Hoosier guard A.J. Guyton at the first-half buzzer, however, gave the Hoosiers a 37-34 lead. Guyton led all scorers with 27 points and nailed five-of-eight from beyond the three point arc. The game pitted two of the top freshmen in conference – OSU’s Michael Redd and IU’s Recker – against each other. Redd came out on top, scoring 19 points and grabbing eight rebounds to lead Ohio State in both categories. Recker scored 15 for Indiana. Singleton and Carlos Davis added 14 for the Buckeyes, while OSU’s Neshaun Coleman reached double-figures with 10.
Ohio State has just one game remaining in historic St. John Arena, a Feb. 28 contest against Penn State. The Buckeyes will hit the road for two games before that, however. OSU visits Northwestern this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Wisconsin next Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
