COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State women’s crew team will have a five-month layoff from regattas this winter before their spring season kicks off in San Diego. In the meantime, the rowers will work on their conditioning five days a week including a 10-day stint in Florida.
The crew will practice on the Olentangy River through Thanksgiving, break for final exams, then head to Florida for the first part of December to row in warmer waters. After the holidays, the squad will condition five days a week, the maximum allowed by NCAA regulations, at the French Field House in the rowing tank. The tank, which holds four rowers at a time, allows athletes to simulate an actual race.
The rowers will also participate in extensive weight training as well as conditioning on rowing machines during their daily 90-minute sessions. The NCAA allows the rowers back on the water Feb. 20, providing the Olentangy is not frozen.
The first spring regatta for the Buckeyes will be the San Diego Classic on March 27 in California. Ohio State will host their first race of the season the following weekend, April 3, rowing against Virginia and North Carolina at the Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River.
