COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Scoonie Penn scored 17 points to lead Ohio State to a 61-49 victory Wednesday night over Robert Morris, keeping the Buckeyes unbeaten.
Michael Redd with 11 points was the only other player in double figures for the Buckeyes (3-0), who have won all three games played at their new Value City Arena.
Kevin Covert had 11 for the Colonials (3-1), who also were unbeaten going into the game.
Both teams struggled with their shooting, with Ohio State making 26 of 60 atttempts from the floor for 43.3 percent and Robert Morris going 20-for-59 for 33.9 percent. The Buckeyes had 3-point attempts, but connected on just one by Brian Brown.
Robert Morris didn’t block a shot while Ohio State blocked 10, with seven of the blocks by center Ken Johnson.
The Buckeyes didn’t pull away until midway through the second half, when a 9-2 run made the score 51-41 with 7:10 to play. Their 12-point final margin was the biggest lead by either team.
Robert Morris led for much of the first half, going ahead by as much as 22-15 with 5:38 to play on a 3-pointer by Brandon Welsch. Ohio State then pulled off an 8-0 run to take a 23-22 lead on a jumper by Penn with 3:56 left in the half.
The lead changed hands four more times in the rest of the half before the Buckeyes went ahead for good 29-28 with 1:06 to play on a basket by George Reese. It was 32-28 at halftime.
