SCOUTING THE FIGHTING PHOENIX The series is tied 1-1-0 since the first meeting in 1993. Green Bay walked away with a 3-1 win in 1993, but the Buckeyes shutout the Phoenix 2-0 in their last meeting. UW-Green Bay plans to overcome obstacles that have been in their way. Losing seven seniors and bouncing back from a 5-12-2 record may seem like an uphill battle, but head coach Quinn Ross is excited for his team. Returning for the women is sophomore Kim Woldt who sat out the 1996 season due to a severe knee injury. Her spectacular 1997 debut brought the Phoenix seven goals and four assists. In the back, several key veterans return to aid the Phoenix defense: Holly Frederickson, Kim Marx and Erin Kremzar. Frederickson, a two-year starter played last season in a defensive midfielder role and fired 15 shots on goal. Marx, a redshirt senior sat out the 1997 season due to an ankle injury. Marx has 28 career points under her belt, including three game-winning goals. Many newcomers plan to battle for significant playing time. Freshmen goalkeeper, Heather Gruiedman is expected to make an immediate impact for the Phoenix in the goal box.
MEET QUINN ROSS Phoenix head coach Quinn Ross enters his third year at UWGB. After an inaugural season in 1996 with a record of 9-9-2, and tallied a 5-12-2 mark last season. Ross was an assistant for the men’s program for four years before accepting the head coaching position. A two-time All-American at Northeast Missouri State University, Ross has also played professionally in Europe for Lyngby Football Club of Denmark and was a member of the Columbus Xoggz.
THE DETROIT TITANS Sunday, the Buckeyes play host to University of Detroit Mercy at noon. The Titans return seven starters, including senior Monica Kaltreider. Last season, Kaltreider recorded 14 goals, nine assists for a total of 33 points. She is also the second leading scorer in UDM history. Goalkeeper Kristi Elliot is back in the net with 86 saves and a GAA of 1.34 from last season. Defender Danielle McIntyre was named one of the best defenders in the MCC and was named second-team All-MCC in 1997. The Titans are coached by Mike Lupenec who in five years has not posted a season with less than a .500 record. In his sixth year, Lupenec has shown his ability to combine coaching and playing experience into a successful formula. Assistant coaches Terry Collins and Kal Kaliszewski will also be on the sidelines giving their input to the Titans, who are ranked No.5 in the MCC. THE BUCKEYES TAME THE WILDCATS The Ohio State Buckeyes slipped by the Northwestern Wildcats in the 81st minute, to record a 1-0 victory and qualify for a spot in the Big Ten Championships Nov. 5-8. In a scoreless first half, the Buckeyes used every measure to score a goal. A wide left attempt by defender Katie Martorella was no good as it hit the top of the goal box and soared to the left out of bounds. Eight other attempts would prove unsuccessful for the Buckeyes. Freshman Melanie Vierling would answer the Buckeyes prayers with a solid shot in front of the goal. Melissa Fox assisted in the only Buckeye goal by dribbling the ball away from goalkeeper Erin Ekeberg and passing left to Vierling.
