Michigan State, Virginia on Tap This Weekend

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 24th-ranked Ohio State field hockey team will put its four-game winning streak on the line this weekend with games against No. 25 Michigan State and No. 11 Virginia. The Buckeyes open Big Ten play against the Spartans on Friday at 3 p.m. in East Lansing and then return home to face Virginia on Sunday at noon.

 Briefly on the Buckeyes

  • Ohio State has won four straight games and is ranked No. 24 in this week’s National Field Hockey Coaches Poll. They are one of eight Big Ten school in the poll.
  • Junior Leanne Bough leads the team in goals (five) and points (10). She has four game-winning goals, the most of any player in the Big Ten.
  • The Buckeyes’ other two multi-goal scorers are sophomore Megan McKenna (three) and senior Emma Goldean (two).
  • Eight different players have registered at least one point.
  • Senior goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez is among the conference leaders in every statistical category, including save percentage (.846), goals-against average (0.90) and total saves (22).
  • Head coach Jarred Martin is in his fifth season leading the Buckeyes and has a 43-36 record.

History vs. Michigan State and Virginia

  • The Buckeyes hold a 42-25-3 all-time record against Michigan State and have won four consecutive games in the series. That includes two contests last spring during the Big Ten-only schedule.
  • The two teams have split the last 10 games.
  • Ohio State is 2-11 all-time against Virginia with wins coming in 1994 and 2014.

An Experienced Roster

  • Ohio State’s 2021 roster includes nine seniors and nine players who have appeared in at least 40 career games.
  • Emma Goldean and Jessica Hourihane possess the most game experience, having each played in 60 career games.
  • Others in the 40 game and over crowd include Katie Pyle (54), Delaney Lawler (40), Sarah Charley (40), Tess Maloney (51), Sammy Stone (44), Julia Dickinson (48) and Aaliyah Hernandez (49).

Big Honors for Hernandez

  • After a weekend performance that saw Aaliyah Hernandez made 13 saves in a pair of wins over No. 14 Wake Forest and Appalachian State, the senior goalkeeper earned two major awards.
  • On Monday, she was named the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Week. Two days later, Hernandez picked up a national award, garnering NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
  • In addition to 13 saves, Hernandez’s stat line also included a .965 save percentage and 0.50 goals-against average.
