COLUMBUS, Ohio — AAA Blue Jackets. Ohio State Buckeyes. And now Columbus Blue Jackets. Carson Meyer, a local product from nearby Powell, Ohio, completed the trifecta of top-level Columbus teams when he made his NHL debut Monday for the hometown team. The next night, the forward picked up his first NHL point with an assist and then scored his first NHL goal before the first period was even over.
Meyer was a sixth-round draft pick of the Blue Jackets in 2017 and signed an AHL contract with the Cleveland Monsters, the CBJ AHL affiliate, in October 2020. After an outstanding start to his professional career, the Blue Jackets signed Meyer to a two-way NHL/AHL deal in April 2021.
Meyer played two years for the Buckeyes. He was part of the 2018-19 Big Ten regular season championship and NCAA Tournament squad and the 2019-20 team that was headed to the NCAA Tournament before the pandemic forced the cancelation of the remainder of the season. He ended his collegiate career with 137 games played, notching 89 points on 42 goals and 47 assists, with 16 power play goals. As a Buckeye Meyer had a 26-27-53 line in 71 games. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sport industry from Ohio State in Spring 2020 and was an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten selection.
