COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State men’s tennis team traveled to East Lansing, Mich. Jan. 15 to compete in the Big Ten Indoor hosted by Michigan State. On the final day of competition only the No. 6-nationally ranked team of Illinois and Ohio State had more than one player left in the draw.
Chris Porter (Jr., Canton, Ohio), ranked No. 62 nationally, was the No. 9-seed of the 64-draw tournament. Porter reached the quarterfinals where he collected a big win over the No. 4-seed and No. 49-nationally ranked Jason Marshall of Purdue, 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-3. After winning four-consecutive matches, Porter advanced to the semifinals before bowing out to Tyler Cleveland from Iowa, 6-3, 6-3.
“After hitting two tournaments in the holidays season, he has now hit his stride,” OSU head coach Ty Tucker said. “He did a great job of changing up his game through out the tournament.”
Teammate Phil Metz (Fr., Mentor, Ohio) produced his biggest win yet at Ohio State by defeating the No. 10-seed and the 1999 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Thomas Haug from Minnesota, 7-5, 6-4. Metz advanced to the third round where he lost to the No. 5-seed and No. 93-nationally ranked Graydon Oliver from Illinois, 6-3, 6-4.
“Phil is going to be a great player,” Tucker said. “He has a chance to win every time he steps on the court.”
Andrew Carlson (Jr., Gambrills, Md.) recorded a 2-2 record. He lost his first round match to No. 4-seed and No. 49-nationally ranked Jason Marshall, 6-4, 7-6. Carlson defeated two opponents in the consolations before losing to Milan Rakvica from Indiana, the No. 13-seed and No. 84-nationally, 6-2, 6-4.
Bob Wellstein (Jr., Perrysburg, Ohio), was defeated in the first round by No. 7-seed and No. 12-ranked in the Midwest Region Tyson Parry from Minnesota, 6-1, 6-3. Wellstein won three-consecutive matches in the consolations to reach the quarterfinals before losing to the No. 3-seed and No. 4-ranked in the Midwest Region Brad Erickson, 6-2, 6-4.
Other Ohio State players competed in the No. 7 and No. 8 Brackett. Vincent Ng (Fr., Broadview Heights, Ohio) lost his first round match but regained momentum in the consolation rounds. Ng won four matches to win the consolations by defeating Alex Hobson from Illinois in the final, 6-2, 6-1.
“Vince did a good job of rebounding after a first round loss,” Tucker said.
The first home match of the season will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday Jan. 22 at the Jesse Owens West Rec against South Alabama.
“It’s going to be a tough match,” Tucker said. “We are looking forward to playing a team that is ranked No. 50 in the country.”
