
Meet the Buckeye Newcomers

COLUMBUS, Ohio – This fall, the Ohio State men’s hockey program will welcome five newcomers, with three forwards and two defensemen.
The group includes Scooter Brickey, a defenseman and transfer from Western Michigan, along with freshmen Davis Burnside, Tyler Duke, Stephen Halliday and John Larkin.
Scooter Brickey
Sr., Defenseman, 6-4, 2015
North Lakeport, Mich.
Western Michigan (NCHC)/Des Moines Buccaneers (USHL)
- Played in 59 games over three years at Western Michigan, with three goals and seven assists for 10 points
- Limited to 10 games in 2021-22
- Played three full seasons in the USHL; started career with 10 USHL games with Muskegon in 2015-16 before joining the league full-time in 2016-17
- Skated in 33 games with the Lumberjacks in 2016-17 and was then traded to Des Moines; totaled 56 games played, with seven goals and 14 assists, on the year
- Saw action in 53 games with the Buccaneers in 20178-18, with 15 assists and 17 points and appeared in 62 games the next year, with 29 points on eight goals and 21 assists
- Played for Little Caesars and Compuware AAA programs
- Father Scott won a men’s hockey national championship at North Dakota
- Family and consumer financial services major
- On why he came to Ohio State: “I chose to be a Buckeye because of the coaching staff and the culture.”
Davis Burnside

Scottsdale, Ariz.
Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL)
- Played three seasons in the USHL
- Skated in 39 games with Des Moines to start 2021-22, with 31 points on 12 goals and 19 assists; ended year with Dubuque, posting a 6-6-12 line in 21 regular season games
- Began 2020-21 with Tri-City, appearing in eight games, before moving to Des Moines, scoring three goals in 19 regular season games
- Started career with Tri-City Storm, skating in 48 games (5g, 4a) in 2019-20
- Played AAA hockey with Chicago Mission
- Assistant captain for Team USA at 2019 Five Nations tournament
- Sport industry major
- Father was an All-American golfer at Elon and grandfather was an Olympic speed skater
- On why he became a Buckeye: “I chose Ohio State because it is a Big Ten school with fantastic academics and has a great atmosphere and coaching staff.”
Tyler Duke
Fr., Defenseman, 5-9, 180
Strongsville, Ohio
U.S. National Under-18 Team (USNTDP)
- Joined U.S. National Team Development Program at start of 2020-21
- In first year, had 25 points, with three goals and 22 assists
- In 2021-22, notched 18 points, including 15 assists, in 54 NTDP games and had a 2-9-11 line in 24 USHL contests
- Part of team that won U18 Five Nations Championship in 2021 and claimed silver medal at U18 World Championship
- Final three years of AAA hockey were with Compuware, winning U14 national championship in 2018
- International Silver Stick tournament winner, four-time state champion and part of silver medalist at U16 Youth Olympic Games in 2020
- Father played hockey at Western Michigan, brother plays at Michigan
- Has not yet declared a major
- On why he is a Buckeye: “I choose Ohio State because I have always loved the school from a very young age. It is an amazing school from an academic and an athletic standpoint. They have a great hockey program with some of the best coaches in the country.”
Stephen Halliday
Fr., Forward, 6-4, 210
Glenwood, Md.
Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL)
- Earned First Team All-USHL honors and the Curt Hammer Award in 2022 while playing for Dubuque Fighting Saints
- Ended USHL career fifth all-time in league history for regular season career points (215) and USHL Tier I regular season career assists leader (147), ranking third all-time in USHL regular season career assists
- 95 points in 2021-22, with 35 goals and 60 assists; point and assist totals both rank third all-time in USHL Tier I history for a single season, setting team records for both
- Played four years in the USHL, three with Dubuque
- Posted 48 points (10g, 38a) in 52 games in 2020-21 and had a 13-25-38 line in 46 regular season games in 2019-20
- Played with Central Illinois Flying Aces in 2018-19, recording 34 points, on 10 goals and 24 assists, in 55 regular season games
- Earned USHL All-Academic Team honors in 2020
- Played AAA hockey with Toronto Marlboros
- Part of Canada Red squad in World Under-17 Hockey Challenge
- Has not yet declared a major, but leaning toward business
- On why he chose Ohio State: “The coaching staff really preached how I can become a better player on and off the ice – not only do they preach on the ice success, but off the ice as well. I think it sets me up for success to grow as a person and as a player.”
John Larkin
Fr., Defenseman, 6-2, 190
Northville, Mich.
Austin Bruins (NAHL)
- Spent 2021-22 with Austin Bruins in the NAHL, with 27 points, including 25 assists, in 49 regular season games
- Played three full seasons in the USHL; Spent 2018-19 and 2019-20 with Youngstown, with three points (1g, 2a) in 53 games his first year and 1-7-8 line in 49 games in year two
- Skated with Muskegon in 2020-21 and notched nine assists and 10 points in 50 regular season games
- Won 14U International Silver Sticks Tournament with Little Caesar’s team
- Also played with Honeybaked and Compuware in junior hockey
- Sister graduated from Ohio State
- Plans to major in engineering or business
- On why he came to Ohio State: “I chose Ohio State because when I visited everything was first class, especially the campus, staff and facilities. Also, it was always a dream of mine to play in the Big Ten and I saw Ohio State as the perfect fit for me.”
