COLUMBUS, Ohio – Emma Maltais has been named one of 25 players selected to Canada’s 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championship roster, Hockey Canada announced Thursday. The championship will be held Aug. 20-31 at WinSport Arena at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Alberta.
Maltais, who was selected to centralize with Hockey Canada in May, makes her world championship debut as a member of the Canadian National Women’s Team. The Burlington, Ontario native is one of three NCAA players to make the 25-player roster.
During the Buckeyes’ 2020-21 campaign, Maltais recorded 16 points on five goals and a team-high 11 assists. In the final eight games of the season, Maltais tallied 11 of her points on five goals and six helpers. The forward was a Top 10 Finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award for the second consecutive year, adding to a postseason accolade list that already includes being chosen as an All-WCHA performer four times in her career.
After being centralized with the Canadian National Team, Maltais plans to return to Ohio State for the 2022-23 season to utilize her additional season of eligibility. She is the WCHA’s active career leading scorer with 158 points (55 goals, 103 assists) and Ohio State’s active career leader in points (158).
Maltais joins fellow Buckeye Natalie Spooner (’12) representing Hockey Canada at the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championships.
The 10-team tournament features Canada in Group A with Finland, ROC, Switzerland and the United States, while Group B is comprised of the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Hungary and Japan. The host nation meets Finland on the opening day, followed by ROC on Aug. 22, Switzerland on Aug. 24 and closes the preliminary round against the United States on Aug. 26. All of the preliminary round games will be played at 6 p.m. ET and broadcast by TSN.
