COLUMBUS, Ohio – Jincy Dunne is officially an Olympian.
The former Buckeye has earned a spot on the United States women’s ice hockey Olympic roster, Team USA and USA Hockey announced Saturday. She joins the 23-player roster that will compete in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games starting Feb. 3. She is one of eight first-time Olympians on the roster.
“I am very happy for Jincy and the entire Dunne family,” Ohio State head coach Nadine Muzerall said. “It’s been a long time coming for her and I’m proud of how she stuck with it, continued to persevere and committed to making her dream come true. Even after hearing ‘no’ so many times, she kept after it because she believed in herself and she believed in her dream.”
Dunne’s career with the U.S. Women’s National Team began in 2012 at the 4 Nations Cup, during which she helped the team to a gold medal finish. She then played in three International Ice Hockey Federation U18 Women’s World Championships, winning gold in 2015 and silver in 2012 and 2014. Last August, she competed for the United States at the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championships, earning a silver medal, and most recently skated in the 2021 My Why Tour.
“I am so happy for Jincy on making the Olympic roster,” said senior defenseman Sophie Jaques. “I know this is something she’s been dreaming about her whole life and with all the work she’s put in over the years on and off the ice, she deserves it more that anyone I know.”
A 2019 graduate of Ohio State, the O’Fallon, Mo. native is one of the most decorated players in Buckeye women’s hockey history. During her final season in 2020, she was named the Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year and received the Big Ten Medal of Honor. A captain for four of her five seasons playing for the Buckeyes, Dunne was twice named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year and is Ohio State’s first and only two-time AHCA First Team All-American. Dunne is tied for third in the Ohio State record book with 99 career points as a defenseman.
“Jincy is arguably one of the better defensemen in the world with her vision,” Muzerall said. “She is not only a solid defender, but she has the capability to be very influential and game changing on the power play.”
Aside from her success on the ice for the Buckeyes, Dunne made an even greater impact as a teammate during her time at Ohio State.
“Jincy was a great leader, very reliable and could be counted on in any situation,” said Jaques. “She is a great teammate and she supported everyone. She was always happier for everyone else’s success above her own. She was always checking in and would go out of her way to make sure everyone on the team knew they were supported and got through any tough times.”
Women’s ice hockey at the Olympic games will be contested Feb. 3-17 at both the National Indoor Stadium and the Wukesong Sports Center in Beijing. Team USA opens Olympic competition against Finland on Feb. 3 and looks to defend its 2018 gold medal at this year’s games.
