COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s hockey defenseman Sophie Jaques has been named a Top-3 Finalist for the 2023 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, the USA Hockey Foundation announced Wednesday. This year is the second in a row that Jaques has advanced to the top-three of the award.
An award of the USA Hockey Foundation, the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award was established in 1998 and is presented annually to the top player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey. The selection criteria include outstanding individual and team skills, sportsmanship, performance in the clutch, personal character, competitiveness and a love of hockey. The remaining finalists are Jaques, Alina Mueller of Northeastern and Danielle Serdachny of Colgate. The winner will be announced on March 18 in conjunction with the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four in Duluth, Minnesota.
Following a record-breaking season in 2021-22, Jaques has showed no signs of slowing down. She has recorded 46 points on 24 assists and a career-high 22 goals. This year marks the second consecutive season she has recorded 40+ points, making her just the fifth true defenseman in NCAA history to record back-to-back 40+ point seasons. She leads defensemen nationally in goals and points this season and ranks in the top-20 in points among all players.
Ohio State’s program record holder for career points by a defenseman (154) also holds the WCHA record for career points and goals by a true defenseman. She ranks third among the league’s all-time true defensemen in career assists.
Jaques leads Ohio State’s nation-leading power play with eight power play goals on the year. She is tied for second nationally in the category.
Defensively, Jaques is one of the most skilled players on the ice this season. She has blocked 47 shots for the Buckeyes and has helped the team hold opponents to just 1.77 goals on the year.
Outside of hockey, Jaques is just as accomplished. After graduating magna cum laude last May with a degree in civil engineering, she is now on a fellowship and earning her master’s in civil engineering. Jaques is a four-time WCHA All-Academic Team and Scholar-Athlete and was the recipient of the 2022 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar Award.
The Toronto, Ont. native is also involved with the Ohio State and Columbus communities. She is in her second year as the vice president of SHEROs, an organization that provides a safe space for minority female student-athletes to have open discussions and promote diversity in sport. She also volunteers with the 2nd & 7 Foundation.
Jaques is one of eight Buckeyes who have been named a finalist for the Patty Kaz and remains the first to be named one of the top three finalists for the award.
