Carson Meyer, a senior on the Ohio State men’s hockey team, had a career night Friday in the Buckeyes’ Big Ten quarterfinal series opener vs. Wisconsin. The Buckeyes downed the Badgers, 9-1.
The Powell, Ohio, native and Columbus Blue Jackets draft pick assisted on the first goal of the game at 7:41 of the first period and then scored FOUR goals of his own in a row, with one in the first (the eventual gamewinner) and three in the second. Two of the four tallies were unassisted, including a power play score. The tallies were scored at 11:39 of the first and 1:02, 4:42 and 13:54 of the second.
Noting Meyer’s four-goal, five-point night
- Meyer had the first four-goal game for a Buckeye since Ron White Feb. 29, 1992 against Lake Superior State.
- It was the first five-point game for an Ohio State skater in exactly 10 years, joining Hunter Bishop, who had a hat trick and two assists in a CCHA Tournament 8-2 win against Notre Dame in the OSU Ice Rink Marc 6, 2010.
- The four goals set a Buckeye postseason record after five players notched hat tricks. Bishop had the only other five-point performance in a playoff game for Ohio State. Meyer’s three goals in the second matched Jeff Madill for goals in a period in a postseason game, who scored three goals in a period twice in his career, with the last March 7, 1987.
- The outing was Meyer’s first career hat trick and the second by a Buckeye this season, after Wyatt Ege scored three times at Mercyhurst Oct. 25, 2019.
- Meyer is the 11th Buckeye with a hat trick in a period and the first since Paul Rutherford vs. Miami Nov. 2, 1990.
- He was +5 in the win, the best for a Buckeye since Josh Healey at Niagara Oct. 28, 2016 and one of just five +5 outings since 1999.
- The game was Meyer’s third career multiple-goal outing and his 13th multiple point game as a Buckeye. It was his first multi-goal outing of the year.
“I kept trying to play the right way,” Meyer said of his night. “I was the lucky one tonight that got the good bounces and had some good passes to me.”

The Hot Streak Continued in Game Two
Meyer scored a power play goal Saturday to put the Buckeyes on the board, as the squad eventually won in overtime, 2-1, to compete a sweep of the Badgers and advance to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals. He led the NCAA with five goals and six points last week.
This season, Meyer is first on the squad with 17 goals, ranking second with 31 points and tying for second with 14 assists, setting career highs in goals and points. He is tied for fifth in the NCAA with a team-best nine power play goals. He is on a five-game point streak, with six goals, four assists and 10 points in the stretch.
