Field Hockey Tops Maine 2-1 in Overtime – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Forward Vanessa Immordino (Sr.; Roseland, N.J.) scored an unassisted game-winning goal in overtime to give the Ohio State field hockey team (7-3; 1-0 Big Ten) a 2-1 victory over the Maine Black Bears (7-3, 0-0 America East) Saturday in College Park, Md.
The Buckeyes started the first period with several shots, but were unable to get the ball in the goal. UMaine scored the first goal of the game on a penalty corner at the 33:07 mark. Karyn Magno scored on the Black Bears first penalty corner of the game, assisted by Amie Dubois and Emily Dooling.
Ohio State tied the game 18:47 into the second half. Lucy Clayton (Jr.; Scarborough, England) gained possession of the ball and passed it off to Immordino who shot the ball to the right of UMaine’s goalkeeper for the Buckeyes first goal of the game. Immordino recorded her 100th career point on the goal, placing her fourth in Ohio State’s career points records. In the second half, OSU outshot UMaine 12-3 and gained eight penalty corners compared to the Black Bears three.
The game was still tied at the end of regulation play and forced into overtime. The Buckeyes were unable to capitalize on their penalty corner in overtime. The squad soon gained an additional penalty corner and used it to its advantage scoring the game-winning goal.
OSU goalkeeper Lindsay Williams (So.; Harrisburg, Pa.) recorded two saves and UMaine Jaye Lance posted seven saves in 81:14 of action. The Buckeye squad outshot the Black Bears 19-6 and had 15 penalty corners compared to UMaine’s four.
Ohio State returns to action at 2 p.m. Sunday when it takes on the Maryland Terps in College Park, Md. The College Sports Television Network will broadcast the Maryland game, which will be shown at 8 p.m. Oct. 14.
