
Emma (Laaksonen) Terho Elected Chair of IOC Athletes’ Commission

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s hockey alumna Emma (Laaksonen) Terho has been elected as the new chairwoman of the International Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission.
Terho was elected in Tokyo by the IOC Athletes’ Commission following the selection of new members to the commission by the athletes at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. She was previously elected to the Athletes’ Commission for an eight-year term during the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, Korea. She also serves as a member of the Coordination Commission for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
Joining Ohio State women’s hockey in its sophomore season, Terho lettered for the Buckeyes from 2001-2004. She made history as Ohio State’s first women’s hockey All-American, earning the JOFA/American Hockey Coaches Association second team All-America honor following the 2001-02 season. The Espoo, Finland native played in 125 career games as a Buckeye and scored 99 points on 34 goals and 65 assists. She was named the WCHA Student-Athlete of the Year in 2004.
On the international level, Terho is a two-time Olympic and four-time IIHF Women’s World Championship bronze medalist as a member of Finland’s national team. She represented her county at the Olympic games and Women’s Worlds from 1998 to 2014 for five Olympic appearances and eight world championship outings.
Terho, who was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009, tops the Buckeye record book in single game power-play goals (three), single season power-play points (29) and single season power-play goals (17). She is tied for third in career power-play goals (23) and single season points (38) and career points (99) by a defenseman.
