COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s tennis head coach Ty Tucker earned another win with the addition of Christopher Diaz, a five-star recruit and recent graduate of Bishop Watterson High School in Columbus. Tucker announced Diaz has signed his national letter of intent to play for the Scarlet and Gray in the fall.
“We are very excited that Chris chose Ohio State,” Tucker said, “He had many offers since he was a Top 20 American recruit. Chris loves Ohio State athletics and he understands the work that will be involved to overachieve on the court.”
Diaz, a blue-chip prospect and the No. 1 player from Ohio in his class according to TennisRecruiting.net, has had a very successful prep career. He is also the No. 2 player in the Boys’ 18 Singles Midwest Rankings. Diaz has improved from being ranked No. 31 nationally by the USTA during his freshman year in 2008 to being ranked as high as No. 19 in the Boys’ 18 single standings during his senior campaign.
The newest Buckeye compiled a 32-6 overall mark in his young USTA career, including a 15-0 record vs. four and five- star opponents. Most recently, Diaz went 6-1 to reach the tournament singles final at the Boys’ 18 Midwest Closed Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind., June 25-30. He also went 4-0 at the Boys’ 18 Midwest Team Cup, June 17-19, and won the Boys’ 18 OV Midwest Qualifier with a 5-0 mark, June 11-14.
At Bishop Watterson High School, Diaz was a three-time state champion under the direction of head coach Barbara Woods. Diaz was undefeated the past two seasons to finish his high school career as a two-time defending Division II singles tennis champion. As a freshman in 2008, Diaz and his brother Philip captured the Division II doubles championship and followed it with a runner-up finish in 2009.
The Watterson graduate made Honor Roll all four years and earned the Silver Racquet Award for his academic and athletic achievements at his alma mater.
Diaz will join an already talented Buckeye roster that is coming off a 34-3 record and a national semifinal appearance.
