COLUMBUS, Ohio – Chase Buchanan, a senior on the No. 2 Ohio State men’s tennis team, was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week, the conference announced Tuesday. The honor is his fifth this season and 15th of his career.
Including the fall season, the Buckeyes have won 11 of the 19 conference athlete of the week honors awarded this season. Ohio State has nabbed the conference accolade the previous five weeks dating back to Feb. 14. Buchanan has won three during the span, while sophomore Blaz Rola has garnered the other two weekly laurels.
The New Albany, Ohio, native, who is ranked 24th in the latest ITA singles poll, defeated 30th-ranked Alexis Klegou 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to lift Ohio State to a 6-1 victory over No. 17 Texas A&M March 9. Prior to his singles victory, Buchanan also was victorious at No. 1 doubles with partner Rola. The nation’s top-ranked pair defeated the 25th-ranked Aggie tandem of Junior Ore and Jackson Withrow 8-3, helping the Buckeyes capture their 16th doubles point in 17 attempts for the season.
The Buckeyes (18-1; 2-0 Big Ten) will resume non-conference action at 3 p.m. March 19 at LSU before travelling to Athens to take on the Georgia Bulldogs at 2:30 p.m. March 21.
