COLUMBUS, Ohio – Not many teams have had a better start to the season than Ohio State and following this weekend’s pair of Top 10 victories, Cannon Kingsley has been named the Big Ten Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.
This is the third consecutive week that a Buckeye has claimed the award as Matej Vocel took the honor in each of the first two weeks of the season.
Kingsley went a combined 4-0 with a pair of Top 15 ranked singles wins in leading the Buckeyes to a pair of sweeps over No. 1 Tennessee and No. 6 Virginia last week. He took down No. 10 ranked Johannus Monday of Tennessee 7-6(9), 7-5, providing the clinching point in the match. He also beat Monday and doubles partner Martim Prata 6-2 in doubles to open the match.
On Sunday, he beat No. 13 Chris Rodesch at the No. 1 singles spot with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory. That followed a 6-3 win in doubles against the Cavaliers, helping the Buckeyes avenge a loss last year to the Cavaliers.
The Buckeyes are 7-0 and have surrendered just one team point on the year while recording four wins over ranked opponents.
