SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Both Buckeye swimming and diving teams were victorious at the Tim Welsh Classic, which wrapped up on Saturday. The men finished with 1,955.5 points, earning almost a 900-point win over Notre Dame, and the women earned 1,803 points, beating second-place Notre Dame by over 900 points. The teams combined for eight pool records at the Rolfs Aquatic Center on Saturday, bringing their total to 20 pool records broken, and one tied, this weekend.
Men’s Meet Notes
- Charlie Clark won the 1000 free with a pool-record time of 8:48.61. Sam Campbell (9:01.44) and Mason Edmund (9:01.83) placed second and third, respectively.
- Thomas Watkins placed second in the 200 back, finishing in an NCAA B cut and pool-record time of 1:42.25. Alex Quach tied for third place with a time of 1:44.26, which is also an NCAA B cut time.
- Ruslan Gaziev (42.58) and James Ward (42.97) each turned in NCAA B standard times in the 100 free. Gaziev placed first and Ward finished second. Gaziev’s time is also a pool record.
- Billy Regan earned a win in the 200 breast with an NCAA B cut time of 1:57.59.
- Quach won the 200 fly, finishing in an NCAA B standard time of 1:45.30.
- The relay team of Tomas Navikonis, Ward, Mario McDonald and Gaziev placed first in the 400 free relay; they finished the event in 2:52.29, which is an NCAA B standard time and a pool record.
- Clayton Chaplin won the 3-meter dive, turning in an NCAA Zones qualifying score of 426.75. Lyle Yost (389.70), Jacob Fielding (370.65) and Mo Noaman (359.30) also recorded NCAA Zones qualifying scores.
Women’s Meet Notes
- Maya Geringer won the 1000 free, finishing in 9:38.23, which is a pool record. The previous record (9:41.74), set in 1990, was held by Janet Evans, a four-time Olympic gold medalist and former world record holder in the 400, 800 and 1500 free.
- Amy Fulmer finished the 200 back in an NCAA B standard and pool-record time of 1:53.39 to place first. Felicia Pasadyn (1:53.55) and Morgan Kraus (1:54.68) finished second and third, respectively, both recording NCAA B cut times.
- Katherine Zenick finished first in the 100 free with an NCAA B standard and pool-record time of 47.62. Teresa Ivan placed second with an NCAA B cut time of 49.33.
- Reese Dehen placed second in the 200 breast, touching the wall in an NCAA B standard time of 2:13.40. Hannah Bach placed third with an NCAA B cut time of 2:13.80.
- Kyra Sommerstad finished fourth in the 200 fly with an NCAA B standard time of 1:58.77.
- The relay team of Fulmer, Tristan Harrison, Ivan and Zenick turned in an NCAA A cut and pool-record time of 3:10.91in the 400 free relay to win the event.
- Lena Hentschel placed third in the 1-meter dive with an NCAA Zones qualifying score of 300.25. Amanda Ling finished fifth with an NCAA Zones qualifying score of 294.50.
