COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s field hockey team opens its 48th season on Saturday, August 17 at 3:00 p.m. at Buckeye Varsity Field. This season marks head coach Jarred Martin’s third season at the helm of the Buckeyes.
In preparation for the season home-opener against UMass, the team will play two scrimmages starting on Saturday, August 17. First up for the Buckeyes is Ohio University followed by a trek to that state up north to play the Wolverines.
PRESEASON CHECK-IN
The team reported back to campus on Aug. 12 with a shorter-than-usual preseason schedule. Coach Jarred Martin has full confidence in his team to rise to the occasion, despite the condensed timeframe for practices.
Coach Jarred Martin on what he wants the Buckeyes to accomplish this Saturday: “Just to see some variety, see what works for us. We’ll try some different formations, different tactical things and see what we can do to build the ball up the field to make sure we are getting those goal scorers in position so they can finish and feel confident.”
OSUFH returns four of their top five leading scorers from last season as well as a dominant goalkeeper. Freshman Mackenzie Alessie joins fall camp in Columbus after securing a bronze medal with the USWNT at the 2019 Pan American Games. The Buckeyes have a collective competitive spirit entering this season, hoping to surpass their achievements from last season. The incoming class of four appears to be a perfect fit to help achieve these goals with their talent and charisma.
“I’m excited for them, there are four of them and they all come from great backgrounds. Some of them were involved with Team USA, and all of them are coming from state championship teams. They’re used to winning, and they are used to winning a lot,” Coach Jarred Martin said.
SCRIMMAGE VS. OHIO
The Buckeyes will host Ohio University in the first scrimmage of the 2019 season this Saturday at Buckeye Varsity Field. Fans should plan to allocate a little extra time for travel as the university will be welcoming thousands of students back to campus for move-in day.
Ohio State and Ohio last met during the regular season in 2018 with the Buckeyes coming out victorious in a 5-2 win. The pair will meet again during regular season play in Athens on October 6th.
2019 SCHEDULE
The Buckeyes are set to play nine games at Buckeye Varsity Field this season and will play eight Big Ten opponents in total.
Home competition will feature a contest against Maryland and Michigan. The Wolverines advanced to the quarterfinals and the Terrapins made it to the championship game of the 2019 NCAA Championship before falling to North Carolina.
