Buckeyes Win Program’s First 200 Medley Relay B1G Title

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9 Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team made history on the first day of the 2022 Big Ten Championships Wednesday evening, winning its first 200 medley relay title in the history of the championships. After the opening day of competition from the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center, the Buckeyes are in second place with 118 points, just two points behind first-place Indiana.
The Scarlet and Gray kicked off the conference championship meet by breaking four records to win the 200 medley relay. The team of junior Hunter Armstrong, senior Hudson McDaniel, freshman Alex Quach and senior Sem Andreis raced an NCAA qualifying time of 1:22.13 to win the first event of the meet. Not only did the team set an Ohio State school record, but the Buckeyes broke the Big Ten conference and championship meet record and set a pool record while racing the third-fastest time in the NCAA this season. The previous conference record was held for eight seasons prior to Wednesday night.
Hunter Armstrong’s 20.45 backstroke split in the 200 medley relay ranks him sixth among all-time fastest relay split performances in the event.
Ohio State picked up another medal in the 800 freestyle relay with a third-place finish in a time of 6:18.53. Sophomores Ruslan Gaziev and Shaw Satterfield and juniors James Ward and Thomas Watkins earned the relay’s best time of the season and an NCAA provisional cut to take bronze and add 54 team points for the Buckeyes.
Tomorrow’s events include the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 1-meter dive and 400 medley relay. Prelims will start at 10 a.m. and finals will begin at 5:30 p.m. ET.
