COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State and Michigan State battled in a scoreless match for over 80 minutes, but the Spartans found the net in the 83rd minute and held on for a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon in East Lansing.

The Buckeyes are now 7-6-1 on the year and 2-3-1 in Big Ten play while the Spartans improve to 9-1-3 and 4-1-1 in the conference.

MSU outshot the Buckeyes 17-9 and each keeper made four saves on the afternoon.

How it Happened

Neither team had many offensive chances in the opening 45 minutes. The Spartans were the aggressors for most of the second half and found the net in the 83rd minute as Lauren DeBeau snuck a shot in just over the outstretched leaping arms of OSU keeper Bailey Kolinski.

The Buckeyes pushed back as Emma Sears’ shot in the 87th minute hit the arm of an MSU defender. Ohio State was awarded a penalty kick and Izzy Rodriguez’s PK was saved in the bottom right corner of the goal by Lauren Kozal.

That was the Buckeye’s last opportunity as the Spartans were able to salt away the final 3+ minutes.

Notes

  • Kayla Fischer led the Buckeyes with three shots on the afternoon. She now has 217 for her career which is sixth-most in OSU history
  • Ari Pitty saw 23 minutes of action in the match. It was her first appearance since Aug. 29 vs. North Carolina.
  • This was the Buckeyes’ first loss in a Big Ten road match in its last six matches
  • The penalty kick in the 87th minute was the first PK for the Buckeyes this season
