INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Ohio State’s run in the Big Ten Tournament ended Sunday night with an 82-65 setback to top-seeded Maryland, but the young, energetic Buckeyes made a statement in their four games this weekend.
This was the 11th time Ohio State had advanced to the championship game and just the second time it had played four games in the same tournament. They were exuberant in a blowout of No. 19 Iowa and resilient in a gritty six-point win over rival Michigan in the semifinals. Both of those teams are NCAA Tournament bound and the Buckeyes are a team not many want to see on their side of the bracket in a couple of weeks.
Sophomore forward Dorka Juhasz led the Buckeyes on Sunday night with 20 points. She made a career-high four three-pointers and also finished with five rebounds and a block.
Freshman Kierstan Bell finished with 13 points on three made threes to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Fellow freshman Jacy Sheldon also made three triples and finished with 11 points.
Braxtin Miller scored just six points but had five assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals. Those two steals gave her 17 for the tournament which ties FahKara Malone of Purdue in 2008 for the most steals in one Big Ten Tournament.
Madison Greene had seven points, five assists and tied her season-high with five rebounds.
Maryland had five players in double-figures led by Stephanie Jones with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Ashely Owusu also had a double-double with 17 points and 11 assists.
The Terrapins broke open a two-point game with an 11-3 run midway through the second quarter. During the run, the Buckeyes missed seven consecutive shots. Sheldon finally broke the drought with her second three and Juhasz had a shot rattle in-and-out that would have cut the lead to two. The Terps then took advantage and closed the half strong to lead 44-35 at the break.
The lead jumped up to 17 points midway through the third quarter and the Terrapins were able to ride that advantage the rest of the way.
Next up, Ohio State will likely hear its name called on Selection Monday during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on March 16.
