PROVO, Utah – Ohio State opened the 2021 season on the road against No. 15 BYU on Thursday evening and would fall to the Cougars 3-0.

The Buckeyes made a late push on the attack in the final 10 minutes and had a number of good looks but just couldn’t quite finish. Junior Emma Sears had six shots on night while senior Talani Barnett played really defensively and goalkeeper Bailey Kolinski made six saves.

How it Happened

BYU opened the scoring early as Cougar three-time All-American Mikayla Colohan took a nice pass from Olivia Smith and finished from the middle of the box to give BYU a 1-0 lead in just the sixth minute. The same combo connected again at the end of the first half to send the teams to the locker room with BYU in front 2-0.

Late in the second half, a loose ball in the box found the foot of Ellie Maughan and she finished to push BYU ahead 3-0.

Notes

  • Sophomore Christin Baumbick was active early, recording two shots in the first 12 minutes. She had two more shot attempts late in the second half for a total of four on the night. She didn’t record multiple shots in any of her 12 games last year as a freshman.
  • Emma Sears had a team-high six shots, the second-highest total of her career.
  • Izzy Rodriguez made her 46th consecutive start and the 67th of her career.
  • Bailey Kolinski made six saves, her fifth game of six or more saves in her career.
  • Buckeye senior forward and first team All-Big Ten honoree Kayla Fischer didn’t play in the game as she served a red card from the NCAA Tournament game against Santa Clara last season.
