COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State women’s volleyball head coach Geoff Carlston’s 2009 recruiting class has been ranked 20th in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com. The Buckeyes are one of four Big Ten schools in the Top 20.
“We are really excited about our first class coming in,” Carlston said. “Beyond just being great young ladies, this is a very talented and athletic group. They will add much needed depth at every position on the court.”
The class features two members of the Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 list for 2009. Emily Danks, a 6-foot, 1-inch right-side hitter from Round Rock Texas, is ranked a PrepVolleyball.com Top 15 recruit. Amanda Peterson, a 6-foot setter from Glen Ellyn, Ill., is a Top 40 recruit for the Buckeyes.
The 2009 recruiting class also features two middle hitters, Mariah Booth and Carly Weisenbach, and a libero, Kelsey Bowler.
Booth, a 6-foot, 3-inch middle hitter from Kennesaw, Ga., led her high school team to back-to-back Area 5AAAAA championships. She was an all-state selection and had 19 kills and 14 digs in the championship game.
Weisenbach, a 6-foot, 3-inch middle hitter from Dublin, Ohio, was a second team all-conference selection in 2008.
Bowler, a 5-foot, 3-inch libero from Naperville, Ill., was an all-conference selection in 2008 and helped her team to four consecutive regional championships.
Ohio State had the fourth-highest ranked class in the Big Ten. Minnesota topped the list at No. 1, Penn State was No. 4 and Purdue was No. 8.
“We had a tremendous spring and grew a lot as a team,” Carlston said. “This freshman class will join a group of players that are motivated for this season.”
The Buckeyes open the 2009 season at the William & Mary Tribe Invitational Aug. 28-29. The squad hosts the Ohio State Sports Imports Classic Sept. 18-19 and plays its first home match against Bowling Green.
