COLUMBUS, Ohio – Team-first wide and skilled receiver Evan Spencer was selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft today by the Washington Redskins. Spencer, an Ohio State team captain, was the 187th player taken.
Spencer joins four-year wide receiver teammate Devin Smith in this year’s draft, giving the Buckeyes two receivers drafted for the first time since Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline were selected in the second and fourth rounds, respectively, in the 2009 NFL Draft.
The receiving pair of Evan and Devin is part of a contingent of five Buckeyes taken so far in this draft. The others: tight end Jeff Heuerman, taken in the 3rd round by the Denver Broncos, cornerback Doran Grant, taken in the 4th round by Pittsburgh, and defensive tackle Michael Bennett, taken six picks before Spencer in the 6th round, by Jacksonville.
Spencer, a solid 6-2 and 208 pounds, was a three-year starting wide receiver who had 52 career catches and seven touchdowns, but it was the selfless, critically important things he did that earned him MVP honors from Coach Urban Meyer. Like block two Alabama players to help spring Ezekiel Elliott on his record 85-yard touchdown run. Or throw a perfect TD pass to Michael Thomas vs. the Crimson Tide. Or pull down the onside kick to help secure the victory over Alabama. And he did things like this throughout his career.
Spencer played in 50 games over the past four years and started 30 times, including all 15 games during the Buckeyes’ 2014 national championship season.
Spencer is from Vernon Hills, Ill., and Vernon Hills High School. He joins his father, Tim Spencer, an Ohio State running back great who is an assistant coach with the NFL’s Tampa Bay Bucs, with the honor of being an NFL Draft pick. Tim was an 11th round selection by the San Diego Chargers in the 1983 draft.
