“First off, it’s my first time here in Blacksburg. My friend, Frank Beamer, he’s got a heckuva place here. That was a top-10er, maybe a top 5-er as far as the emotion, the crowd. The buses coming in today, I had high expectations cause I talked to some folks that had played here and it certainly didn’t disappoint. They played really hard, both teams. A little disappointed in our point of attack a little bit on the offensive and defensive line but overall we’ll take that win against a very good team in a tough environment.
“I would like to say this, I love Braxton Miller. When you have selflessness, you make a lot of decisions as you have to and he did it for the best interest of his team and Ohio State and when I think about that it makes you feel good. I love that kid, man. And when he does the spin move and the ridiculous athletic ability. He broke down in there, got real emotional. So the negative about football is that you don’t see their faces, you see a helmet and sometimes a visor and you don’t get to see what the kid’s all about. This kid’s all about great stuff. I got to coach him again for the fourth year and I love this guy. A bunch of other guys played well and I just wanted to make sure, I say I and I’m talking about our whole team As far as being a captain that tells you how much our guys think of him.
“… Cardale finished the season as the starter and that kind of started the thinking that he had to get beat out and he wasn’t beat out, it was very close. We’ve got two good players and they’re going to play. I almost went to J.T. [Barrett] earlier but it was such a pressure game that with Cardale’s size I thought he could get over the top and their defensive front was all over the place and that was the decision.
“He [Michael Brewer] killed us last year. He’s a guy who made a couple great throws, got a lot of respect for him as a player. I think someone said that he broke a collarbone and that’s horrible, it’s the worst part of this darn game with injuries and we wish him well.
“He’s [Braxton Miller] a guy that started his career that didn’t want to run around college and lift weights. He wasn’t a grinder and he is now. If you say I’m going to put you against that guy, he won’t lose. His greatest gift is he’s a competitor and I saw that I missed that. … If Braxton left we’d have been just above a .500 team.
“The culture, I keep on saying it, I want to bottle it, it’s really good and they’re into it. There are no locker room issues or who’s the quarterback, none of that, zero. Both kids handled it great, they both said when I talked to them a week before and they said whatever we can do to help this team win.
“I’m really devoted now to offense and hear third down and go. I thought we did average, it all depends on your expectation level and our’s at this point I wouldn’t say we played great. There’s a high draft pick in there at defensive end and he’s going to be a late first, early second and he plays like it. I think they were really good but we have to play better.”
