COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Ohio State women’s hockey forward Minttu Tuominen has been named to the Finnish Women’s National Team for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Team Finland announced Thursday. She will make her fourth consecutive appearance at the Olympics.
Tuominen heads to China with two Olympic medals in her collection, earning bronze in 2010 and 2018. At the 2018 games in PyeongChang, she scored one goal and added two assists to tie for fourth among defensemen in scoring. Her Olympic debut in 2010 was during her rookie season at Ohio State.
“Minttu’s selection to her fourth Olympic team shows just how hard she works,” Ohio State head coach Nadine Muzerall said. “She is an incredible player and we are so proud to have her representing Ohio State at the Olympics. Minttu has been a role model for many of our players, being an example for what they can achieve if they’re willing to work for it.”
As a Buckeye from 2009-13, Tuominen played in 124 games and recorded 16 goals and 33 assists. During her senior season, she served as an alternate captain. Off the ice, she is a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, three-time WCHA All-Academic Team honoree and two-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete.
The Helsinki, Finland native becomes the fifth Buckeye to be named to an Olympic roster this month. This year’s games mark the first time that five Ohio State women’s hockey players will play at the Olympics. Tuominen is second in Olympic appearances by a Buckeye, one behind former Team Finland teammate Emma (Laaksonen) Terho who played in five Olympics during her career.
Finland plays its first game in Beijing on Feb. 3 against the United States in the preliminary round. The preliminary round will be played from Feb. 3- 8. The quarterfinals will be contested on Feb. 11 and 12 and semifinals on Feb. 14. Medal games begin on Feb. 16 with the bronze medal game and the gold medal matchup following on Feb. 17.
