Top-10 Matchup Opens Buckeyes’ 2021 Home Schedule

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A top-10 matchup kicks off the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team’s 2021 home schedule on Saturday as the No. 6 Buckeyes host No. 9 Rutgers inside Ohio Stadium. Fans can watch the game live on BTN Plus. Ohio State captain and All-American Greg Bice will be on the call.

Briefly on the Buckeyes
- Ohio State is ranked No. 6 in both major polls this week (Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and the USILA Coaches Poll) following its 14-8 season-opening victory at Johns Hopkins last weekend.
- In that game, four different players had multiple goals to key a balanced attack. Graduate student Tre Leclaire led the way with four goals.
- Griffin Hughes matched his career highs in both goals scored (three) and points (four).
- A total of six players scored goals while eight had at least one point.
- On the other end of the field, junior goalie Skylar Wahlund made his first career start and stopped nearly 60 percent of the shots that he faced. He finished with 11 saves.
- The Buckeyes had two first-time starters on close defense in George Walsh and Eric Wenz along with freshman Connor Cmiel, who started at long stick defensive midfield.
- In the face-off X, four different players took draws. Ryan Terefenko won five of nine to lead the way.
Scouting Rutgers
- Rutgers started its season out in a big way last Saturday, knocking off No. 6 Penn State at High Point Solutions Stadium, 11-9.
- The Scarlet Knights moved up eight spots in the USILA Coaches Poll this week, the highest riser of any team in the country.
- Connor Kirst made an instant impact in his Rutgers debut with seven points on three goals and four assists.
- Colin Kirst also excelled in his debut, playing alongside his brother as RU’s starting goalkeeper. The Bernardsville, N.J. native had 15 saves, the most stops of any Big Ten goalkeeper.
History vs. Rutgers
- Rutgers has won nine of the 12 all-time meetings between the two teams.
- Since the creation of the Big Ten men’s lacrosse league for the 2015 season, Rutgers owns a 3-2 edge in the series.
- The Buckeyes defeated Rutgers in 2016 and 2018, both at Ohio Stadium.
- The two teams played six times between 1992 and 1999 before the series was resumed in 2015 when they became conference opponents.
Mr. Everything
- Ryan Terefenko has always been versatile for the Buckeyes, but last Saturday may have been the perfect example of his all-around skills.
- Terefenko started on the first offensive midfield line while also playing his customary short stick defensive midfield.
- He also took faceoffs for the first time ever, winning five of nine.
- Terefenko picked up six groundballs and also scored a goal.
- Terefenko is Ohio State’s active career leader in ground balls (145).
Leclaire Chases a Record
- Graduate student Tre Leclaire is just eight goals away from becoming Ohio State’s all-time leading goal scorer.
- The Surrey, British Columbia native has 139 goals in 55 career games. Logan Schuss, a three-time All-American during his career from 2010-13, currently holds the record with 146.
- Leclaire’s 139 career goals are the sixth-highest among active Division I players.
A Strong Debut
- Three players made their Ohio State debuts last weekend at Johns Hopkins: Eric Wenz, Jack DeSantis and Connor Cmiel.
- Wenz and DeSantis are both transfers while Cmiel is a true freshman.
- DeSantis, a Columbus native and DeSales High School graduate, finished with an assist and ground ball in the winning effort.
- Wenz, who was an All-CAA performer at Hofstra, is a graduate transfer and started alongside Jacob Snyder and George Walsh on defense. He had four ground balls.
- Cmiel, an Ohio native at St. Ignatius graduate, started at long stick midfield.
