Sugar Bowl Notes – Day Two – Ohio State Buckeyes

New Orleans, La. – The Buckeyes second day in the Bayou brought an early practice in the cool morning air which turned into warm sunshine at the New Orleans Saints practice and training facility. Following a spirited workout on the grass fields, the Buckeyes planned on taking in the New Orleans Saints game against the Buffalo Bills. Rob Kelly, a four-year OSU letterman and starter on the 11-1, 1997 Rose Bowl winning Ohio State team, is a second-year free safety for the Saints.
Boston & Murphy held out of practice All-American receiver David Boston and All-American left guard Rob Murphy were each held out of the teams first two practices Saturday and Sunday as precautionary measures. Boston has a slightly sprained left ankle. Murphy has a leg infection. Both players practice status will be determined daily, but both are expected to be completely healthy and in the starting lineup for Fridays Sugar Bowl matchup with Texas A&M.
Lumpkin arrives John Lumpkin, who caught a spectacular 50-yard touchdown pass in last years Sugar Bowl, arrived in New Orleans at 10 p.m. Dec. 26 after a day of airline delays. The 6-8 senior tight end spent seven hours in the Cincinnati airport before his flight finally took off. His connecting flight went through Dallas before landing in New Orleans.
Last minute instructions The Buckeyes met with representatives of the New Orleans police department Saturday evening before dinner to get briefed on the city. Head coach John Cooper: “Its something we did last year as well. We always talk to the team about how they handle themselves. The guys all know to stay together and not wander away from the main tourist areas.”
