Adam Cohen, who joined the Ohio State women’s tennis program as an assistant coach in September 2014 and was named the program’s associate head coach in 2016-17, has been part of record setting campaigns.
A four-time ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year (2016, ’21, '24, '26), the Buckeyes have earned an NCAA Tournament berth each year he has been on staff, with trips to the semifinals, quarterfinals and Round of 16, along with nine ITA National Team Indoor Championship appearances. He has helped coach the Buckeyes to five Big Ten regular season and four Big Ten Tournament titles. The Scarlet and Gray have compiled a Big Ten record of 119-13 during his tenure and are 261-67 overall. In the ITA team rankings, the Buckeyes have finished ranked among the top six five times, along with four other top 15 final rankings.
Individually, Cohen has coached five players to a combined 11 singles All-America accolades. He guided the Buckeye duo of Francesca Di Lorenzo and Miho Kowase to the 2017 NCAA Doubles Championship and the pair of Luciana Perry and Flora Johnson to Big Ten Doubles Team of the Year honors, with all four Buckeyes claiming doubles All-America accolades.
The 2025-26 team was among the most outstanding in school history, advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor final for the first time in program history and reaching the NCAA semifinals for the second time (and first since 2017). The squad was 27-5 overall and claimed the Big Ten regular season title with a 12-1 league mark, along with reaching the conference tournament championship match. Perry, who reached the NCAA Round of 16, and Teah Chavez were both ranked in the singles top five much of the season and ended the year as All-Americans, with Perry and Johnson ranked eighth at the end of the year to claim doubles All-America accolades. Johnson and Perry were named the Big Ten Doubles Team of the Year and Chavez was selected the Big Ten Player of the Year. Cohen was selected the ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year as the Buckeyes hosted NCAA first and second round and Super Regional matches for the second straight season. Chavez and Perry were voted First Team All-Big Ten and three Buckeyes were named to the second team - Sophia Cisse-Ignatiev, Nao Nishino (who captured the ITA Midwest Region singles title) and Audrey Spencer. Hephzibah Oluwadare was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.
The 2024-25 Buckeye squad was 23-4 and claimed the Big Ten Tournament title after going 12-1 in the regular season. Ohio State was the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament and hosted first and second round matches for the fifth straight year, as well as a Super Regional match for the first time. Perry became the second Buckeye to reach the NCAA quarterfinals, and the first since 2001, earning her second All-America honor and she and Chavez ended the year ranked in the Top 20 to earn All-America accolades. Perry and Chavez were unanimous selections to the All-Big Ten team and Nishino earned a spot on the inaugural B1G All-Freshman Team.
Cohen was selected the ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2024, when the Buckeyes were 20-8 and posted a 10-1 regular season conference record and reached the tourney final. Ohio State was the No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament and hosted first and second round matches for the fourth year in a row. Perry was selected the ITA National and Midwest Region Rookie of the Year and earned B1G Freshman of the Year accolades. Perry joined Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff on the All-Big Ten team. Cantos Siemers and Perry both reached the NCAA Singles Championship Round of 16 to earn All-America accolades and two doubles teams were NCAA qualifiers.
In 2023, Ohio State was 22-8 overall and finished 10-1 in the Big Ten, ending the year ranked 10th. The squad earned the No. 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament and hosted first and second round matches, notching two wins to advance to the Super Regionals. Cantos Siemers was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Year and was joined by Ratliff on the All-Big Ten team. The duo also qualified for the NCAA singles championship.
In 2022 Ohio State captured the outright Big Ten regular season title with an 11-0 mark and earned the No. 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament, hosting first and second round matches. The squad ended the year 21-6 overall (11-0 in the B1G), earned an ITA Indoor Championship berth and finished the year ranked 15th. For the first time Ohio State had three players in the NCAA Singles Championship, along with a doubles tandem. Cantos Siemers earned All-America accolades and was joined on the All-Big Ten team by Isabelle Boulais, with Ratliff earning Big Ten and ITA Midwest Region Freshman of the Year honors.
In 2021 Cohen was named ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year for the second time. He helped guide the Buckeyes to a 23-4 mark overall and 15-1 Big Ten ledger, as the team captured the conference regular season and tournament crowns. The Buckeyes hosted NCAA Tournament first and second round matches as the No. 15 seed and advanced to the Round of 16. Cantos Siemers earned All-America honors and was an NCAA singles qualifier, while Boulais and Kolie Allen were selected for the NCAA doubles tournament.
Cohen was tabbed the 2016 ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year after the team won both the outright Big Ten regular season championship (11-0) and the conference tournament title for the first time. The Buckeyes were the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament, hosted NCAA matches for the first time and became the first Ohio State team to reach the quarterfinals. Individually, four Buckeyes earned All-Big Ten honors and the team had NCAA singles and doubles qualifiers for the first time since 2001. Francesca Di Lorenzo won the first ITA title in program history, became the third Buckeye All-American and was named Big Ten Player of the Year and Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
The team reached even higher the next season in 2017, advancing to the NCAA semifinals for the first time in program history. The tandem of Di Lorenzo and Miho Kowase captured the 2017 NCAA Doubles Championship, marking the program’s first NCAA title, and the duo earned All-America honors. The team defended its Big Ten regular season and tournament crowns and had four All-Big Ten selections. In all, the squad was 32-3, setting the record for wins in a season.
In 2017-18, the Buckeyes again earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament, posting a 14-9 overall record and tying for third in the Big Ten. The squad had two All-Big Ten honorees and Shiori Fukuda was named the ITA Midwest Region Rookie of the Year and Big Ten Freshman of the Year. The following year, the squad was 19-7 and continued its streak of NCAA Tournament appearances. The Buckeyes were 8-3 in Big Ten play to tie for third and Boulais won ITA regional and conference freshman of the year accolades, joining Fukuda on the All-Big Ten team. The 2020 squad was 9-3 and ended the year, shortened by the Covid-19 pandemic, ranked fifth, poised for another NCAA trip. Fukuda earned All-America honors in singles and was the B1G Player of the Year.
During Cohen’s first year (2014-15), the Buckeyes were 20-7, earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament, finished second in the Big Ten and reached the B1G Tournament championship match, ending the year ranked 21st.
Cohen was the head men’s tennis coach at Binghamton University prior to coming to Columbus. After his first year with the Bearcats in 2006-07, he led the squad to seven consecutive NCAA appearances. Cohen led Binghamton to seven-consecutive America East conference titles and an overall record of 120-79.
His tenure at the school was highlighted by the 2009-10 squad which posted a school-record mark of 25-2 and reached as high as No. 43 in the ITA rankings. The Bearcats were 7-1 vs. the Ivy League schools, with the lone loss to Columbia. Sven Vloedgraven was the first Bearcat to win the ITA Northeast Regional title, claiming back-to-back championships in 2009 and ’10, and he also competed in two NCAA Outdoor Championships and two ITA Indoor Championships. Cohen was a five-time America East Coach of the Year and earned ITA Northeast Region Coach of the Year accolades twice. The program had 34 ITA Scholar-Athletes in his last five years combined, including eight in 2014.
After serving as an assistant at University of Louisiana-Lafayette (1997-98), where he helped guide the squad to a Sun Belt Conference title and NCAA bid, Cohen joined the coaching staff at his alma mater, Minnesota, and the Golden Gophers made seven NCAA tournament appearances in eight years, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2000. The team was ranked in the Top 25 consistently during his tenure and finished the 2003 campaign ranked 10th.
A standout for the Golden Gophers, Cohen played his final two collegiate seasons at Minnesota, leading the program to back-to-back Big Ten titles in 1994 and 1995. He began his collegiate career at Southern Illinois – Edwardsville, where he helped the team finish seventh at the 1993 NCAA Division II Championship.
A native of Buffalo, Minn., Cohen earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Minnesota in 1997. He and his wife, Sara, have a son, William.
