The Ohio State women’s volleyball program and head coach Jen Flynn Oldenburg announced the addition of Skylar Lopas to the staff on Dec. 31, 2024. Lopas will serve as an assistant coach.
“I’m incredibly excited to welcome Skylar to the Buckeye Volleyball family,” Oldenburg said. “His passion and knowledge of the game stood out instantly in the interview process. Skylar's experience over the course of his career will have an immediate impact on our program and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to work with him!"
Lopas served as the head coach at Flagler College the past three seasons, accumulating a 43-40 overall record and an 18-17 conference record. Lopas led Flagler to a pair of Peach Belt Conference Tournament championships (2022 and 2024) and to the NCAA Tournament in both of those seasons. In 2022, Flagler made a regional final appearance and followed that with a regional semifinal appearance in 2024. Three Saints players were named AVCA All-Americans following the 2024 season, while Lopas’ first season saw a player named PBC Setter of the Year and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Lopas coached all-conference performers in each of his three seasons.
“I want to thank Jen Flynn Oldenburg for entrusting me with this incredible opportunity,” Lopas said. “I am deeply honored to be joining THE Ohio State women’s volleyball program. The commitment to our sport here rivals anyone in the country. My goal is to have a positive and lasting impact on these incredible student-athletes’ lives as we grind through the B1G together – striving for success on and off the court. Go Bucks!”
He previously spent time as a volunteer assistant coach at Florida (2019-22), an assistant coach at North Florida (2016-19) and a volunteer assistant coach at Michigan (2014-16). Lopas earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management from Warner University in 2013. He led Warner to back-to-back NAIA Final Four appearances as the team captain.
During his time at Florida, the Gators made three NCAA Tournament appearances in three seasons, including a regional final appearance (2020) and two regional semifinals appearances. Lopas was in charge of the middle blockers and positional development, coaching a pair of AVCA All-Americans and an SEC All-Freshman Team honoree. He coached one of the most efficient hitters in the nation and the conference leader in blocks/set in 2020.
During his time at North Florida, Lopas guided the middle blockers to consistently rank at or near the top of the league in blocks/set. He also led the middle blockers at Michigan, coaching an AVCA All-American at that stop as well.
Lopas has also coached at the club and high school levels in Gainesville, Orlando and Ann Arbor.
