Taver Johnson is a veteran defensive backs coach and a veteran at Ohio State, having previously worked on the program’s staff from 2007-11 and again in 2018. He was hired by head coach Ryan Day in March 2025 to work as an analyst with the defensive backs.
Johnson’s experience includes coaching at at nine different universities and with two NFL teams – Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders and the Philadelphia Eagles. He came to Ohio State after spending last season as part of the Tennessee Volunteers staff.
He spent two seasons on staff of the Philadelphia Eagles as assistant defensive backs coach. He was cornerbacks coach (2019-20) and assistant defensive backs coach (2021) in his three seasons with the NFL’s Raiders.
Prior to joining the Eagles, Johnson served as the defensive pass game coordinator and safeties coach at Eastern Michigan in 2022. He helped Eastern Michigan rank first in the MAC in interceptions (13, tied) and second in opponent completion percentage (54.9 pct.) during its 9-4 campaign.
Johnson is a native of Cincinnati. He is a graduate of and played football at Wittenberg University (1990–1993) where he was a back-to-back All-American and the All-North Coast Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1992 and 1993.
