Josh Boyer joined the Ohio State football staff in 2025, and he serves as a senior analyst for the defense. He has more than two decades of coaching experience at the college and NFL levels. A Heath, Ohio native and Muskingum College graduate, he spent 13 seasons with the New England Patriots and played a key role in three Super Bowl championships before later serving as defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins.Â
Boyer began his coaching career in 2000 at King’s College, then moved through graduate assistant stops at Dayton and Kent State before becoming the defensive backs coach at Bryant in 2004 and defensive coordinator at South Dakota School of Mines in 2005. He joined the Patriots in 2006 as a defensive coaching assistant and moved up to defensive backs coach from 2009-11 before being named cornerbacks coach in 2012.Â
In New England, Boyer helped develop a series of standout defensive backs while the Patriots won Super Bowl titles in XLIX, LI and LIII. He then followed Brian Flores to Miami in 2019, where he served as defensive pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 2020.Â
As a player at Muskingum, Boyer was a four-year starter who played wide receiver before switching to defensive back as a senior and earning All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors in 1999. He graduated with a degree in physical education and health. Â
