Jason Brooks joined the Ohio State football staff in March 2026 in a defensive quality control position. He arrives in Columbus with over 15 years of coaching experience at the collegiate and professional levels, including stints in the National Football League with the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.
From 2023-25, Brooks served as a defensive quality control coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, contributing to a defense that repeatedly played in the upper half of the league against the pass, generated double-digit turnovers, and helped the Steelers reach the postseason twice at 10–7. In 2021-22, he worked with the Baltimore Ravens during two of the most productive defensive seasons of the Lamar Jackson era, serving as the team’s assistant defensive line/quality control coach in 2021 and later as a football analyst in 2022, helping support a defense that ranked near the top of the league in many efficiency metrics and bookended strong defensive units around a perennial playoff-contender.
Brooks spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons as the defensive line coach at Charleston Southern University, where his unit set program records in his first year. Three Buccaneers - Anton Williams, Shaundre Mims, and Nick Salley - earned First-Team All-Big South honors, with Mims (10.0 sacks) and Salley (17.5 tackles for loss) leading the conference in their respective categories. Salley also led the Big South in forced fumbles (3), while the team set a single-season sack record with 35.0 and ranked sixth in the conference in tackles for loss (95.0).
Prior to Charleston Southern, Brooks spent two seasons as the defensive line coach at Colby College in Maine, followed by four years at Florida International University, where he coached defensive backs and special teams. FIU’s secondary helped the Panthers climb from 11th to 3rd in Conference USA in total defense from 2013 to 2014 and produced a school-record five pick-sixes and six defensive touchdowns in 2014.
Brooks began his coaching career in the NFL, spending four seasons (2009-12) with the Baltimore Ravens as an offensive assistant and offensive quality control coach, working with the wide receivers and running backs units and contributing to the team’s Super Bowl XLVII championship. He also spent time as a scouting assistant with the Miami Dolphins (2007–08) under the Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Coaching Fellowship and was a student assistant coach at Middle Tennessee State University in 2006, working with the running backs and special teams.
Brooks is a 2006 graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, where he played defensive back and was a four-year letter-winner. He is the son of the late Clarence Brooks, who spent 24 years coaching in the NFL and 17 seasons on the college level, including a long tenure as a defensive line coach for the Ravens, Dolphins, Browns, and Bears.
