Showdown With No. 1 Texas Set for Saturday

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In one of the biggest matches at the Ohio State Varsity Tennis Center in recent history, No. 6/4 Ohio State is set to host No. 1 Texas this Saturday at Noon. This is a huge early season matchup against two of the top teams in the country. The Longhorns are 4-0 and are the defending NCAA Outdoor Champions. The Buckeyes are 7-0 and the defending ITA Indoor Champions. Admission and parking is free for all Ohio State home matches.

  • Ohio State is a remarkable 287-1 at home since April of 2003. The loss that preceded the streak came against No. 1 Illinois. The only loss during the streak came against No. 1 Oklahoma on March 6, 2015. This will be just the third time since 2003 that the Buckeyes have hosted a No. 1 team in Columbus.
  • The all-time series between Texas and Ohio State is tied up at 8-8. The Longhorns won the first five matches in the series but since 2011, the Buckeyes are 8-3.
  • Last year, Texas won 4-1 in Austin but were without the services of the country’s top player in JJ Wolf as he was participating in a professional event.
  • The Buckeyes have started the year 7-0 and has yet to surrender a point. In fact, the Buckeyes have dropped just one set in any match this season.
  • Ohio State hosted and won the ITA Kickoff Weekend last weekend for the 12th consecutive season. The Buckeyes knocked-off Purdue and Tulsa and qualified for next month’s ITA Indoor National Championship which will be hosted by Wisconsin in Madison.
  • Last year, Ohio State won its second ITA indoor crown and will serve at the defending champion in a couple of weeks.
  • The Buckeyes have won at least a share of the last 14 Big Ten titles and 12 of the last 14 Big Ten Tournament titles
  • They have made an NCAA Tournament appearance in each of the last 20 seasons
  • Head coach Ty Tucker is in his 21st season and has a record of 592-87 (.872)
  • The Buckeyes are ranked No. 6 in the Oracle/ITA Rankings and No. 4 in the USTA poll.
  • The singles and doubles rankings will not be updated until next week. Currently, Cannon Kingsley is No. 16, John McNally is No. 24, Kyle Seelig is No. 28 and James Trotter is No. 40.
  • The doubles team of McNally and freshman Robert Cash finished the fall at 13-2 and are currently ranked No. 2
