COLUMBUS, Ohio – Five Buckeyes remain in the hunt for a national championship after the early session of the 2022 NCAA Championships Thursday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan. Three Buckeyes are in the hunt for third place in the consolation bracket of their respective weight classes.
All eight Buckeyes resume competition in the second session at 7 p.m. Thursday. Ohio State is tied for 11th with seven points in the overall team standings after Session I.
Sammy Sasso (149), Carson Kharchla (165), Kaleb Romero (184), Gavin Hoffman (197) and Tate Orndorff (HWT) remain alive in the championship bracket.
Malik Heinselman (125), Dylan D’Emilio (141) and Ethan Smith (174) will compete in the consolation bracket for a chance at third.
Session 1 Results
125 | (21) Taylor LaMont (UVU) def. (12) Malik Heinselman (OSU) | D, 7-2
LaMont opened the scoring with a first period takedown and then added another in the second after a Heinselman escape to start the period. An escape and takedown in the third was enough for LaMont to win by decision, 7-2. Heinselman will wrestle in the Thursday evening session against (28) Korbin Meink of Campbell in the consolation bracket.

141 | (16) Quinn Kinner (RID) def. (17) Dylan D’Emilio (OSU) | D, 3-0
After a scoreless first period, Kinner deferred his choice and D’Emilio chose neutral to start the second. Again, neither wrestler was able to score in the second. Kinner chose bottom to start the final three minutes and escaped for the 1-0 lead. Kinner got the takedown with just over a minute left to go up 3-0 and win by decision. D’Emilio moves to the consolation bracket to wrestle Thursday evening against (32) Josh Mason of Bloomsburg.

Sasso scored Ohio State’s first takedown of the championships with just under a minute left in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Starting in the down position to start the second, Sasso got the quick escape to go up 3-0. The wrestlers started neutral to open the third. Sasso added a takedown to end the match with a win by decision, 5-0. Sasso advances to face (13) Beau Bartlett of Penn State in Session II.

165 | (7) Carson Kharchla (OSU) def. (26) Lucas Revano (PENN) | D, 8-2
A takedown with just under two minutes left in the first put Kharchla in the lead 2-0. Revano escaped to make it 2-1 Kharchla entering the second. Revano chose bottom and escaped to tie the bout at 2-all before Kharchla scored the late-period takedown to lead 4-2 entering the third. The Buckeyes added a point with an escape and then two more on a takedown and with a point for riding time, Kharchla advanced with an 8-2 win by decision. Kharchla remains in the championship bracket to face (10) Jake Wentzel of Pittsburgh in Session II.

174 | (26) Tyler Eischens (STAN) def. (7) Ethan Smith (OSU) | D, 13-12
Smith wasted little time scoring the first takedown of the match and after an Eischens escape, led 2-1. Eischens took a 3-2 lead on a takedown of his own that led to a two point near fall. Smith escaped to trail 5-3 heading into the second period. The Stanford lead increased to 6-3 after an escape. Smith then scored a takedown followed by an Eischens reversal to make it 8-5 Stanford. Smith escaped again and down 8-6 but Eischens went back up by four, 10-6, on a late takedown to end the second. Smith scored a reversal early in the third followed by an Eischens escape. Smith added another takedown and then allowed an escape to trail 12-10 but quickly tied the bout with another takedown. But a late Eischens escape secured the Stanford win by decision, 13-12. Smith will wrestling in the consolation bracket in Session II.

Romero quickly put two on the board with a takedown. Washington escaped but Romero scored a takedown and four-point near fall to lead 8-1 after the first three minutes. Washington scored another escape and the period ended in favor of the Buckeyes, 8-2. Romero was awarded a point when Washington was called for stalling and then added a takedown, another point for IU stalling and a point for riding time to win by major decision, 13-2. Romero will wrestle (10) Taylor Venz of Nebraska in Session II of the championship bracket Thursday evening.

197 | (21) Gavin Hoffman (OSU) def. (12) Tanner Sloan (SDSU) | SV-1, 6-4
Sloan struck first with a takedown followed by a Hoffman escape for the 2-1 lead. Sloan went up 3-1 on an escape in the second. Hoffman added a late escape and takedown to go up 4-3 and the match went into sudden victory tied 4-all with Sloan earning a riding time point. Hoffman got the winning takedown to win, 6-4. Hoffman advances in the championship bracket and will wrestle (5) Nino Bonaccorsi of Pittsburgh Thursday evening.

HWT | (13) Tate Orndorff (OSU) def. (20) Joe Doyle (BING) | MD, 10-2
Orndorff got out of the gates with two quick takedowns around a Doyle escape. The Buckeyes led 4-1 with over two minutes of riding time entering the second period. Orndorff added an escape point and takedown a minute into the second to lead 7-2 after five minutes of action. Orndorff finished off the match with a takedown and a point for riding time to win by major decision, 10-2. Orndorff advances in the championships bracket to face (4) Greg Kerkvliet of Penn State in Session II Thursday evening
