Schoenly Duo Earns USTA Silver Ball

Dani Schoenly, a freshman on the Ohio State women’s tennis team, and her father, Doug, received the Silver Ball as the runner-up at the 2021 National Father & Daughter USTA Grass Court Championships at Longwood Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

The duo, from Powell, Ohio,  was unseeded but reached the championship match in the 32-team draw. After a first round win, the Schoenly tandem defeated the No. 4 seed in the Round of 16, 6-1, 6-2 and prevailed over the No. 5 seed by the same score in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals the Ohio tandem won 6-2, 6-2 over the No. 2 seed. The title bid ended in the final against the top seeded duo and defending champion from Florida. The Schoenly team won the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second in tiebreaker, 6-7 (5) and lost in the third, 6-3.

Dani Schoenly, a product of Olentangy Liberty High School, was a two-time Ohio state doubles champion, four time state qualifier and a four-time All-Ohio selection, as well as the Greater Columbus Tennis Association Female Athlete of the Year. Her father played tennis at Penn State and is a tennis professional.
