Rosenthal Strikes Twice in 7-2 Win over Bemidji

COLUMBUS, Ohio. – The No. 5 Ohio State women’s ice hockey team downed Bemidji State, 7-2 on Friday evening. Gabby Rosenthal scored two goals and posted a team-high three points along with Emma Maltais who scored one goal and tallied two assists. With the win, Ohio State improves to 17-6-4 (10-4-3 WCHA) and the Beavers slip to 14-13-2 (8-10-1 WCHA).

Buckeye Bits

  • Junior goaltender Lynsey Wallace posted her fifth start of the season in the contest and recorded 17 saves. Her season record improves to 4-1-0.
  • Freshman goaltender Quinn Kuntz relieved Wallace with 6:04 left in the contest and posted five saves in her second career appearance.
  • Junior defender Lisa Bruno recorded her 100th career game.
  • Emma Maltais posted two points in the first period with a goal and an assist. With a third period assist, she tallied a three point game. Maltais now has 128 career points. She is now tied for sixth in Buckeye history with Olympian, Tessa Bonhomme.
  • Gabby Rosenthal and Sophie Jaques both posted two points in the second period with a goal and an assist each.
  • Rosenthal led the team with two goals on the night.
  • Ohio State outshot Bemidji, 41-24.

Ohio State 7, Bemidji State 2

First Period

The Beavers came out strong against Ohio State but the Buckeyes lit the lamp twice in the 19th minute of the period to gain a comfortable leading going into the locker room. Emma Maltais won an offensive faceoff back to Liz Schepers who got off the quick shot to break the stalemate at 18:18. Just 19 seconds later an aggressive forecheck by Schepers and Tatum Skaggs forced goaltender Lauren Bench to turn the puck over to Emma Maltais who buried a shot past a recovering Beaver. Ohio State outshot Bemidji 16-5 in the opening period.

Second Period

Ohio State opened scoring in the second period with a pair of goals in just over one minute. Sophie Jaques scored at 10:35 off a long-range shot from inside the blue line. She was assisted by Gabby Rosenthal. Moments later, Rosenthal had her own chance on goal and went bar down on Bench for a two-point period. With under four minutes left Jincy Dunne took a blue line shot that was redirected by Brooke Bink to extend the lead to 5-0. It marked the third career goal for the freshman forward.

Third Period

The Beavers got on the board early in the final frame as Lydia Passolt scored just 31 seconds into the period. The Buckeyes found themselves on a 5-on-3 power play after two quick Bemidji penalties and Rosenthal tallied her second goal of the night assisted by Dunne and Maltais. With a 6-1 lead, Paetyn Levis scored her second goal of the season with just over six minutes left in the game. Bemidji tallied one final goal with 57 seconds remaining.
