COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s Izzy Rodriguez was selected by the Kansas City Current in the fourth round of the NWSL Draft on Saturday afternoon. The Buckeye defender was the 43rd pick overall.
Rodriguez was a Senior CLASS Award finalist this season and was on the MAC Hermann Award Preseason Watch List for the second time in three seasons. The three-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region honoree played in 88 career games for the Buckeyes over the last five seasons, making 87 starts. She had eight goals, 11 assists and was part of 29 shutouts in her career.
The Canton, Mich., native was a three-time All-Big Ten honoree and was the 2020 Big Ten Defender of the Year. She was part of a defense that had a scoreless streak of over 315 minutes last season. Rodriguez is a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and on Sunday, she will receive her finance degree at Winter Commencement.
Rodriguez is the third Buckeye selected in the NWSL draft, joining Lindsay Agnew (2nd Round, Washington Spirit) and Nichelle Prince (3rd Round, Houston Dash) who were both drafted in 2016.
The NWSL was established in 2012 as the successor to Women’s Professional Soccer. The league held an expansion draft on Dec. 16 for its two newest teams in Angel City FC and San Diego Wave FC. The four-round 2022 NWSL was held virtually on Saturday afternoon. The league schedule is set to begin in the spring of 2022.
