Ratliff Earns Big Ten Athlete of the Week Accolade

COLUMBUS, Ohio Sydni Ratliff, a freshman on the No. 11 Ohio State women’s tennis team, has been named Big Ten Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

Ratliff, from Columbus, Ohio, and a Columbus Academy graduate, was 2-0 in both singles and doubles as the Buckeyes posted two ITA Kickoff Weekend wins to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. She led the Buckeyes with a 4-0 record on the weekend.

Ratliff, ranked No. 123, posted two straight set singles wins over players ranked in the Top 60. On court three, she defeated No. 55 Oona Orpana of No. 24 Oklahoma State Saturday and she topped No. 56 Elza Tomase of No. 20 Tennessee Sunday. Ratliff put Ohio State up 3-1 vs. OSU and 2-0 vs. UT en route to 4-1 and 4-0 team victories. In doubles, Ratliff and Irina Cantos Siemers, who are ranked 29th, won 6-4 on court two vs. the Cowgirls (for a 2-1 team win in doubles) and 7-5 on court one vs. the Lady Vols, clinching the doubles point.

The Buckeye rookie is 3-1 in singles and doubles in dual matches this year. She is 13-5 overall in singles, with a 15-8 doubles mark.

This is the second straight Big Ten honor for a Buckeye, with Isabelle Boulais recognized last week.

Ohio State (2-2) will return to action Feb. 11-14 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Madison, Wis.
