Ohio State’s Seeds Announced for 2022 NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State’s eight NCAA wrestling qualifiers learned their seeds and first-round opponents Wednesday in advance of the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships March 17-19 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.

The Buckeyes qualified wrestlers in eight-of-10 weight classes last weekend at the 2022 Big Ten Wrestling Championships at Pinnacle Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska. Click HERE for the recap.
2022 Ohio State NCAA Qualifiers

125 (Malik Heinselman, 2021-22 Record: 20-5, Career: 73-34)
Malik Heinselman qualified for his fourth NCAA championships after automatically qualifying for the event with a fifth-place finished at the 2022 Big Ten Championships last weekend.

Heinselman is the 12-seed in the 2022 NCAA Championships. He will open with No. 21-seed Taylor LaMont (10-4) of Utah Valley University next Thursday.

In his first NCAA appearance in 2019, Heinselman was the No. 25 seed and posted a 1-2 record. He was seeded No. 27 in the canceled 2020 event and then No. 10 in 2021, where he also went 1-2.

141 (Dylan D’Emilio, 2021-22 Record: 20-9, Career: 30-17)
Dylan D’Emilio is making his second NCAA Championship appearance. He qualified this year by finishing fifth at the Big Ten championships last weekend.

He is the No. 17-seed this year at the NCAA event and will face No. 16-seed Quinn Kinner (18-6) of Rider to open the tournament.

D’Emilio went 2-2 in the 2021 NCAA Championship as the No. 30 seed.

149 (Sammy Sasso, 2021-22 Record: 21-2, Career: 61-6)
Sammy Sasso is making his third NCAA championships appearance after finishing second last weekend in the conference tournament.

In the canceled 2020 NCAA event, Sasso was the No. 3 seed. He was the No. 1 seed a year ago and finished second overall with a 4-1 record.

No. 29-seed John Arceri (22-10) of Buffalo will face No. 4-seed Sasso, a two-time All-American, in the 2022 first round next week.

165 (Carson Kharchla, 2021-22 Record: 21-3, Career: 21-3)
Carson Kharchla is making his first NCAA championship tournament. He qualified by finishing fourth last weekend in the Big Ten tournament.

Kharchla opens as the No. 7-seed next week and will face No. 26-seed Lucas Revano (19-11) of Penn next Thursday.

174 (Ethan Smith, 2021-22 Record: 20-5, Career: 74-35)
Ethan Smith has qualified for the last four NCAA Championships. He advanced out of the 2022 Big Ten Championships after finishing third last weekend.

This will be the second time he qualified at 174 pounds. He was the No. 19 seed at 174 in 2019. He finished 2-2 in that tournament.

Smith, a two-time All-American, qualified at 165 in the canceled 2020 tournament and then again at that weight in 2021, where he finished fifth with a 4-2 record as the No. 7 seed.

This year, he opens the NCAA Championships as the No. 7-seed and will face No. 26-seed Tyler Eischens (19-10) of Stanford in the opener.

184 (Kaleb Romero, 2021-22 Record: 13-3, Career: 54-22)
Kaleb Romero, an All-American in 2020, is making his third NCAA championship appearance in 2022 after finishing fourth at the conference tournament last weekend. This will be the first year qualifying at 184 pounds.

At 174 in 2020 (canceled), Romero was the No. 6 seed and was the No. 7 seed in 2021. He posted a record of 2-2 a year ago.

His first-round opponent is No. 26-seed Donnell Washington (13-6) of Indiana. Romero enters the 2022 NCAA event as the No. 7 seed.

197 (Gavin Hoffman, 2021-22 Record: 13-10, Career: 44-27)
Gavin Hoffman finished eighth in the 2022 Big Ten tournament to qualified for his first NCAA Championship.

He opens as the No. 21-seed and will face No. 12-seed Tanner Sloan (20-5) of South Dakota State.

HWT (Tate Orndorff, 2021-22 Record: 16-9, Career: 71-33)
Tate Orndorff is making his fourth NCAA Championship appearance and his second as a Buckeye.

He was an All-American a year ago with an eighth-place finish (4-3) as the No. 21 seed.

At Utah Valley State, he was the No. 15 seed in 2019 in the NCAA tournament. He was 2-2 that year. He was the No. 8 seed in the canceled 2020 tournament.

Orndorff opens 2022 as the No. 13-seed. He will wrestle No. 20-seed Joe Doyle (16-9) of Binghamton in the opener next week.
