Buckeyes win shootout in three rounds with goal by Natalie Spooner
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team prepped for the upcoming 2009-10 season with an exhibition game Friday against Wilfrid Laurier University from Ontario at the OSU Ice Rink. With 1:06 remaining in the game, the Golden Hawks scored for the 1-1 tie.
The Buckeyes open their regular season schedule next weekend, Oct. 2-3, in a nonconference series at Boston University.
The teams skated through two scoreless periods with Ohio State coming out of the gate strong and outshooting WLU by 14-1 and 15-5 margins.
At 7:20 in the third period, the Buckeyes erased the shutout when junior defenseman Shannon Reilly fired a shot from the top of the left circle that sailed over the right shoulder of Liz Knox, in goal for Wilfrid Laurier. Reilly was assisted by Natalie Spooner and Rachel Davis.
Ohio State killed off a 1 minute, 30 second 5-on-3 power play opportunity for the Golden Hawks within the last four minutes of the third period. But Wilfrid Laurier did not ease up and finally scored at 18:54 when Alicia Martin jammed in the puck from low in the slot, set up by Laura Bartolini and Heather Fortuna.
After a 5-minute overtime, the game went into a shootout. Spooner scored in the second round and junior goaltender Deidre Facklis turned away all three shots for the 1-0 shootout win. Also shooting for the Buckeyes was Kim Theut and Hokey Langan, who both had their shots saved by Knox.
For the game, Ohio State had a 40-17 advantage in shots. Both teams were 0-for-7 on the power play.
The Buckeyes played all three of their goalies, with Facklis getting the start. She made a single save in the first period, followed by sophomore Barbara Bilko (five saves, second period) and freshman Chelsea Knapp (10 saves, third and overtime periods).
