Ohio State Student-Athletes Recognized at Annual Awards Banquet – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Department of Athletics held its annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet Wednesday at the Greater Columbus Convention Center to honor its student-athletes for their academic and athletic accomplishments.
The winners of the prestigious Big Ten Medal of Honor were field hockey player Allison Blanton (Newton, N.J.) and men’s lacrosse team member Kevin Stephan (Massapequa Park, N.Y.). Each member institution in the conference gives the award annually to the male and female athletes in the graduating class who have attained the greatest proficiency in both academics and athletics, as chosen by the Ohio State Athletic Council. The Big Ten Conference office established the award in 1914 and an additional award for the top female was instituted in 1982. This honor includes a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship for the recipients who would like to pursue a graduate or professional program at Ohio State.
Blanton, who recently was named field hockey’s team MVP and the winner of the team academic award with a 3.64 GPA in agriculture and animal science, capped off an outstanding career this season. She is a two-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Regional All-American, a 2001 NFHCA National Academic Squad selection, the 2001 Big Ten Tournament co-MVP, a two-time All-Big Ten and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete. She also was named to the prestigious Verizon Academic All-District IV University Division Women’s At-Large First Team and will represent the district on the national ballot. Her 10.5 career shutouts is third most in OSU history.
She is a four-year recipient of the Buckeye Plus Scholarship and the Baxter Scholarship. Blanton received the Kellogg Scholarship in 2001 and is an honors student at Ohio State. She has been a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board and in addition to playing goalkeeper for the nationally-ranked Ohio State lacrosse team, Blanton volunteers for Habitat for Humanity and the Ohio Wildlife Center. Blanton’s love of animals has led her to pursue a major in animal science and a minor in life science. She plans to continue her studies at Tufts University Veterinary School.
Stephan, of Massapequa Park, N.Y., has been a key leader and role model both athletically and academically for the lacrosse team. Stephan’s leadership is evident from the recognition given to him by his team, as he received the 1999 Outstanding Freshman Award, the 2001 Sportsmanship Award and was elected team captain for both the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Stephan’s consistent and solid performance as a midfielder was a large factor in his team winning the 1999 Great Western Lacrosse League Championship.
Stephan’s leadership and character transcend into the academic realm as well. A marketing major in the College of Business, he has earned Dean’s List honors and is a member of both the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Golden Key Honor Society. He was awarded the National Buckeye Scholarship and the Trustees Scholarship. He is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and four-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete. Stephan is an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board as a team representative and as editor of the student-athlete newsletter. He has been involved in numerous community service activities, including participating in the mentor program and reading to elementary children. Stephan’s academic and career plans include work in the sports marketing industry before attending graduate school to earn a MBA.
The other finalists for the 2002 Big Ten Medal of Honor were Collis Boyce (Lacrosse/Butler, Md.), Daryl Brazeau (Soccer/Hanover Park, Ill.), J.J. O’Rielly (Cross country and track/Dover, Ohio), Tyson Walter (Football/Bainbridge, Ohio), Carolina Moraes (Synchronized swimming/Sao Paulo, Brazil), Isabela Moraes (Synchronized swimming/Sao Paulo, Brazil), Monica Rincon (Tennis/Lapeer, Mich.), Lauren Shenk (Basketball/Minster, Ohio) and Emily Thorpe (Soccer/Cincinnati, Ohio).
A total of 366 Ohio State student-athletes were recognized at the banquet, including the following seniors who were honored with annual awards.
Five student-athletes, Stephan, Brandon Paul (Men’s lacrosse/Olney, Md.), Phillip Freeman (Wrestling/Cincinnati, Ohio), Erin Baker (Women’s volleyball/Elmhurst, Ill.) and Kristin Sander (Women’s swimming/Cincinnati, Ohio) received the Corwin A. Fergus Memorial Award. Fergus scholars are male or female student-athletes who have excelled in athletics, achieved academically (3.00 GPA minimum), demonstrated positive qualities of character and citizenship and shown potential for success in a graduate or professional program. Established in 1967, the award is given in memory of Corwin A. Fergus, a member of the Ohio State football team (1912-14), a graduate of the Ohio State School of Law and later a successful businessman. The award reflects his strong commitment to the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence and the Fergus’ positive contributions to society. The $5,000 postgraduate scholarships, which each are renewable for up to three years, can be utilized for graduate study or professional programs at Ohio State.
Courtney Nein (Women’s soccer/Middletown, Ohio) received the Leann Grimes-Davidge Award which is a tribute to Grimes-Davidge’s contributions to athletics at Ohio State. The honor is given annually to a female athlete who reflects Grimes-Davidge’s outstanding qualities of athletic performance, scholarship, character, campus or community involvement and leadership. A member of the Ohio State women’s tennis team, Grimes-Davidge won four state and Big Ten titles. She graduated from OSU summa cum laude and received her master’s degree from Miami (Ohio) University where she served as the head women’s tennis coach.
Shenk was the recipient of the John T. Sr. and Hulda E. Edwards Award. The award, which must be used within three years, is given to further the education of a student-athlete who is enrolling in professional or graduate school at Ohio State. The award reflects academic achievement of at least a 3.2 GPA, financial need, evidence of being admitted to postgraduate study at Ohio State, high quality of character, a positive attitude toward the American free enterprise system and participation in a varsity sport. Shenk will begin studies this fall at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in order to pursue a career in the medical field.
Shenk also received the Irving and Melvin Schottenstein Award, which has been awarded annually since 1976. The award was one of the first designed specifically to recognize and promote women’s achievements in intercollegiate athletics at Ohio State. It provides an outstanding female scholar-athlete with assistance for postgraduate studies at Ohio State. The award is based on demonstrated athletic and academic success as well as community contributions through involvement in civic or university organizations.

The Ohio State University, the Athletic Council and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics proudly salutes and celebrates the accomplishments of the following 366 student-athletes who have distinguished themselves by performing brilliantly in the classroom and in athletic competition this past year. All of these individuals have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better since the end of the winter quarter of their freshman year.
