Ohio State Sets Smallbore Record, Posts Two Highest Scores of the Season

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University rifle team made the over 4,000-mile journey to Fairbanks, Alaska to compete in a pair of matches against the University of Alaska over the weekend.

On Friday the Buckeyes competed against the host Nanooks at the Tanana Valley Sportsman’s Association, firing a team score of 4694 (UAF 4751). In smallbore the Buckeyes fired a score of 2340 led by a career-best score of 589 by Tyler Hanson. Viktor Kiss and Derek Keiser both fired scores of 586 while Lillian Warren also fired a career-best score of 579. Nathan Wehrlen (577) rounded out team scoring. Paige Hollowell led the way for the individuals with a career-best score of 578 while John Hamilton (572) and Philip Becker (568) rounded out the team scoring. In air rifle the team fired a score of 2354 with Derek Keiser (591), Viktor Kiss (589), John Hamilton (588), Lillian Warren (586), and Paige Hollowell (584) making up the counting team. Nathan Wehrlen (586), Philip Becker (585), and Tyler Hanson (582) rounded out individual scoring for the Buckeyes.

On Saturday Ohio State competed at UAF’s Patty center and fired a season-best team score of 4694. In smallbore the team fired a program-best smallbore team score of 2344. Viktor Kiss led the way with a score of 590 which was one point away from the individual program record. Derek Keiser fired a career best score of 587 while Tyler Hanson (584), Nathan Wehrlen (583), and Lillian Warren (576) posted very solid performances in the record effort. Firing as individuals, both Paige Hollowell (584) and John Hamilton (578) fired career best scores to round out a fantastic smallbore day for the team. In air rifle the team fired a score of 2353 led by a career best score of 592 from Paige Hollowell. She was followed by Viktor Kiss (589), Lillian Warren (586), Derek Keiser (585), and John Hamilton (585) who rounded out team scoring. Philip Becker (584) and Tyler Hanson (580) rounded out individual scoring for Ohio State.

Coach Tanoue: “It is always an exciting and unique opportunity to make the journey to Fairbanks and I felt that our team handled the challenges extremely well while also taking steps forward with regard to our performance. Setting a new team record in smallbore was fantastic to watch and there were many career best performances throughout the weekend. Through three matches we are off to the best start to a season ever for our program, but our group is still very eager to continue to improve and grow as we navigate the early part of our season.”

The Buckeyes return to action in El Paso, Texas on Saturday, October 22nd and Sunday, October 23rd in a pair of matches against the UTEP Miners.
