COLUMBUS, Ohio – Addie Engel captured the individual title and the Ohio State women’s cross country team was second at the Big Ten Preview, with the men finishing fifth, Friday morning. Michigan hosted the meet on the U-M Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich., giving teams a chance to run on the course that will hold the Big Ten Championships in October. Both the men’s and women’s races were a 6K.
Quoting Head Coach Sara Mason Vergote
“The women did a great job following the race plan. I’m happy we put this meet on our schedule because we definitely learned some things I think will help us when we come back at the end of October for the Big Ten Championships.
“We weren’t at full force with the men today, missing two guys out of our Top 5, but they will be back in the mix next time we come back for Big Tens. Right now we are focused on making progress each week and I feel like we did that today.”
Buckeyes at the Big Ten Preview
Engel, who finished first for the second race in a row, came across the line in 20:54.4. She was in third heading into the final 1K and passed two Wolverines, who finished in 20:54.9 and 20:55.5, for the win.
Daniella Santos was fifth, just .3 behind the fourth-place finisher, and Andrea Kuhn was ninth to put three Buckeyes in the Top 10. Morgan Schmitt in 22nd and Akemi Von Scherr in 28th rounded out the Buckeye point-getters.
Zubin Jha was first for the Buckeye men in 28th, with Sean Carney (31st), John Cuozzo (35th), Keegan Souhan (37th) and Ivan Slyepkan (39th) the others in the Ohio State Top 5.
Michigan, the host school, claimed both the men’s and women’s titles.
