Ohio State Improves to 18-0 with Road Win Against Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – The No. 3/3 Ohio State Buckeyes (18-0, 7-0 B1G) beat Nebraska (11-7, 3-4 B1G) in Lincoln on Saturday afternoon by a 76-67 margin in the teams’ lone meeting of the season as the Buckeyes led from start to finish. The Buckeyes’ 18-0 continues to be the best start in program history.

Ohio State started quickly with the first six points and had runs of six, seven and eight during the first 10 minutes to lead 25-12 after 10 minutes. The second quarter was back-and-forth the entire time as the Buckeyes took a 42-32 lead into the locker room.

Rebeka Mikulášiková (25) and Taylor Mikesell (14) led the Ohio State offense, each reaching double figures in the first half. Taylor Thierry (13) also reached double figures on 6-of-6 shooting, including six points in the fourth quarter. The Buckeyes shot better than 50 percent as a team both from the floor and beyond the arc.

How it Happened

Ohio State scored the first six points of the game and used another 7-0 run to take a 13-2 lead, forcing a Nebraska timeout with 5:48 to play in the opening quarter. The Huskers got within five at 17-12 with 2:14 remaining in the quarter on a three-pointer. The Buckeyes wrapped up the quarter with the final eight points, including triples from Mikesell and Mikulášiková, to extend the lead to 25-12 after 10 minutes.

The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair with neither team scoring more than two-consecutive baskets. Mikulášiková led the OSU offense with six points in the quarter, while Hevynne Bristow added five points. Ohio State took a 42-32 lead into the locker room.

Nebraska scored the first seven points of the second half to get within three at 42-39 with 7:39 to play in the third quarter, prompting an Ohio State timeout. The Buckeyes got a pair of triples from Rikki Harris and Hevynne Bristow to hold a 48-45 lead midway through the quarter. Mikulášiková scored the next nine points for OSU as the Buckeyes outscored the Huskers 14-5 down the stretch. Ohio State led 62-50 after 30 minutes as third-quarter scoring was capped by a three-point play by Thierry.

Mikulášiková opened the fourth quarter with her third triple of the game. Ohio State held the 67-54 advantage at the media timeout with 5:31 to play. Scoring picked up out of the media timeout as the Buckeyes increased their lead to 74-58 with under three minutes remaining, forcing a Nebraska timeout. The Huskers got a pair of layups to prompt an OSU timeout with the Buckeyes up 74-62 with 2:19 to play.

Game Notes

  • Taylor Mikesell was the first in the game to double figures, doing so for the 17th time this season. She totaled 14 points on the afternoon.
  • Rebeka Mikulášiková scored in double figures for the 11th time this season, passing 10 points in the first half and finishing with 25 points. This is her sixth 20-point game of the season.
  • Taylor Thierry reached double figures for the 12th time this season on 6-of-6 shooting. She finished with 13 points.
  • Q1: Ohio State made six of its first eight field-goal attempts, compared to Nebraska going 1-of-9 before the media timeout. The Buckeyes finished the quarter 10-of-19 (.526) from the field and 3-of-5 (.600) from long range.
  • Q2: The Buckeyes also shot better than 50 percent from the floor in the second quarter, making 6-of-11 attempts.
  • Q3: OSU increased its accuracy to 7-of-11 (.636) from the floor and went 3-of-3 from long range during the quarter.
