Ohio State Competes in Philly Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing teams closed out the weekend at the Philly Invitational hosted by UPenn Sunday. The No. 7-ranked Buckeye women were 4-1, with the No. 5 men 3-2, with many of the top teams in the nation competing in the event.

This weekend, the women went 7-3 combined in Saturday’s St. John’s Invitational Cup in Queens, N.Y., and Sunday’s Philly Invite and the men were 5-5 combined. On the year, the women are 20-8 and the men have posted a 20-9 record.

In Philadelphia Sunday, the Buckeye women defeated No. 33 NYU (18-9), No. 10 Temple (17-10), No. 11 Penn (17-10) and No. 17 St. John’s (18-9), falling to No. 3 Princeton (18-9). The men posted victories against No. 10 NYU (15-12), No. 11t Yale (16-11) and No. 11t St. John’s (14-13), dropping matches against No. 2 Princeton (18-9) and No. 6 Penn (14-13).

Women’s epee was 4-1 and a team-best 30-15 on the day, while the women’s foil squad was 4-1, with a 25-20 individual record, and women’s sabre was 3-2, going 24-21. Dasha Myroniuk led the women and foil with 12 wins Sunday. In sabre, Julieta Toledo was first with nine wins, followed by Ele Perrier with eight. Julia Semikin was first for the women’s epee squad with eight victories, Kelly Feng had seven and Lucy Whittemore had six.

On the men’s side, epee was 4-1 as a squad, posting a 26-19 combined ledger, foil was 3-2, with a 23-22 mark, and sabre was 1-4 and 18-27 individually. Paul Veltrup and Lorenzo Mion had 11 wins each to pace epee and foil, respectively, and Nolan Williams was first for sabre with eight victories.
