Ohio State Claims Battle of Ohio, 86-56

ATHENS, Ohio – The No. 8/10 Ohio State Buckeyes (3-0) beat Ohio (0-3) by an 86-56 margin on Thursday night at the Convocation Center.
Ohio State used its defensive game to frustrate Ohio early, forcing 11 Bobcat turnovers in the first quarter alone to build an 18-8 lead after 10 minutes. The Buckeyes continued to build on their lead with 25 points in each of the second and third quarters to cruise to the 30-point win.
How it Happened
Ohio earned a trip to the line on the first possession, making one free throw to open scoring. Jacy Sheldon completed a three-point play to get the Buckeyes on the board. A 6-0 Ohio State run gave the Buckeyes an 11-3 advantage just past the midway point of the quarter. OSU scored the final seven points of the quarter to lead 18-8 after 10 minutes.
After an opening Bobcats layup, Ohio State scored the next seven, including a three-point play from Taylor Thierry, to build the lead to 25-10. Madison Greene scored a stretch of seven points for the Buckeyes, followed by four from Rebeka Mikulášiková and five from Taylor Mikesell, increased OSU’s advantage to 41-18. The Buckeyes went into the locker room with a 43-22 lead.
Ohio opened third-quarter scoring with a triple before nine-unanswered Ohio State points pushed the Buckeyes’ lead to 52-25 with seven minutes to play in the quarter. OSU used a 7-0 run and scored the final five points of the quarter to lead 68-35 after 30 minutes.
The teams traded points with the Bobcats mixing in a 7-0 run as the Buckeyes led 71-45 midway through the fourth quarter. Kaia Henderson capped scoring for Ohio State as the Buckeyes earned the 30-point win, 86-56.
Game Notes
- Taylor Mikesell (14) Rebeka Mikulášiková (11) and Jacy Sheldon (16) have all scored in double figures in each of the Buckeyes’ first three games of the season.
- The Ohio State defense has forced at least 29 turnovers in each game this season with this being the second-straight game forcing 30 or more.
- Madison Greene scored a season-high 10 points.
- Kaia Henderson and Mya Perry both made their collegiate debuts with Henderson also scoring her first collegiate points.
- The Buckeyes completed all six three-point plays presented to them, with Sheldon a perfect 3-of-3.

- Head Coach Kevin McGuff: “It’s important to get a lot of people in the game [this early in the season], especially the newcomers – like Eboni [Walker] for example. We want to get those kids some more minutes so they can get some experience and get used to how we play and how we do things.”
- Senior guard Jacy Sheldon: “Our defense is the backbone of our game and defense leads to offense. Having an emphasis on that every night no matter who we’re playing is important to us. We always ask about our press and it’s kind of sporadic but it works because we all know how each other plays and we play off each other.”

Ohio State returns home for a three-game homestand, beginning on Sunday against McNeese State. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. in a game broadcast on B1G+.
