No. 8 Buckeyes Knock off No. 14 Minnesota, 24-14

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 8 Ohio State (8-3, 4-3) knocked off No. 14 Minnesota (4-6, 3-4) 24-14 Friday at Maturi Pavilion in Minneapolis.

No. 10 Malik Heinselman got the Buckeyes on the board with a 10-6 win at 125 over No. 9 Patrick McKee but it was No. 20 Dylan D’Emilio’s pin of No. 15 Jake Bergeland at 141 that set the tone for the Buckeyes in the road win.

Six Buckeyes will be honored Sunday at halftime of the match against Indiana (1 p.m.) at the Covelli Center in Columbus.

Fritz Schierl and Cade Hepner, who complete their eligibility this year, along with Brady and Dylan Koontz, Kaleb Romero and Tate Orndorff, all seniors but with one year of eligibility remaining, will be honored after the fifth match of the day during intermission.

How it Happened

 

125 | No. 11 Mailk Heinselman (OSU) vs. No. 9 Patrick McKee (MINN)

Heinselman struck first with a takedown followed by a McKee escape for the 2-1 lead for the Buckeyes. Heinselman added a point with an escape to start the second (3-1) and then added a takedown for a 5-1 advantage. McKee added a point with an escape to end the second and another to start the third to trail in the match 5-3. Both wrestlers needed a stop in action for injury time early in the third. Both returned and Heinselman quickly recorded a takedown (7-3) followed by a McKee escape and a takedown to cut it to 7-6. Heinselman then escaped and added a takedown to win by decision, 10-6.

133 | Brady Koontz (OSU) vs. No. 29 Jake Gliva (MINN)

An escape to start the second by Gliva was the first point of the match. After a penalty point was awarded to Gliva, he added a takedown to lead 4-0 heading into the third. An escape by Koontz in the third made it a win by decision for Gliva, 4-1.

141 | No. 20 Dylan D’Emilio (OSU) vs. No. 15 Jake Bergeland (MINN)

D’Emilio put the first two on the board with a takedown a minute in to the first period. Bergeland earned an escape near the end of the first to make it 2-1. D’Emilio escaped to start the second for the only point of the period to extend the lead to 3-1. D’Emilio then got the win with a pin (5:24).

149 | No. 2 Sammy Sasso (OSU) vs. No. 30 Michael Blockhus (MINN)

Sasso scored first with a takedown. Blockhus earned an escape followed by a takedown and a near fall for the 8-1 lead. Blockhus escaped and recorded a takedown early in the second. Sasso escaped to hold a 9-4 advantage with one period to play. He added another escape and to finish off the match with a win by decision, 10-4.

165 | No. 4 Carson Kharchla (OSU) vs. Cael Carlson (MINN)

Kharchla quickly scored the first takedown of the match. He added two more to lead 6-3 after the first. Carlson added a point on an escape in the second. Kharchla escaped to start the third to lead 7-4. Carlson added a takedown followed by a Kharchla escape to end the match with the Buckeye winning by decision, 8-6.

174 | No. 7 Ethan Smith (OSU) vs. No. 18 Bailee O’Reilly (MINN)

Smith led after the first, 7-4, with three takedowns and an escape after an O’Reilly reversal. Smith added an escape to start the second for the 8-4 lead. Smith finished off the match with a win by decision, 11-8.

184 | Rocky Jordan (r-Jr.) vs. No. 20 Isaiah Salazar (MINN)

Jordan needed just 10 seconds for the first takedown of the match. Salazar escaped for a point and added a takedown and a near fall to lead 7-3 after three minutes of action. Salazar led 9-5 after two. Jordan escaped early in the third and then added a takedown but Salazar held on for the win by decision, 10-8.

197 | No. 21 Gavin Hoffman (OSU) vs. Michial Foy (MINN)

Hoffman recorded a reversal to start the second for the first points of the bout. He led 2-1 heading to the third. Foy got a point when Hoffman was called for locked hands and then added an escape to take a 3-2 lead. Foy added a takedown to win by decision, 5-2.

HWT | No. 13 Tate Orndorff (OSU) vs. No. 1 Gable Steveson (MINN)

Steveson scored early and kept the pressure on to lead after the first, 10-2. Steveson finished off the match to win by technical fall, 19-4 (4:06).
