No. 7 Buckeyes Dominate No. 23 Maryland, 38-6

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 7 Ohio State (9-1, 3-0) turned in a dominate effort Friday in College Park, Maryland by downing the No. 23 Terrapins (8-2, 0-2) 38-6 to improve 3-0 in Big Ten Conference competition.

The Buckeyes started off quick with a Sammy Sasso win at 149 by major decision and never looked back, winning nine of the 10 bouts on the evening.

149 | No. 3 Sammy Sasso (OSU) def. No. 18 Ethen Miller (UMD) | MD, 12-1

Sasso scored a hard-fought takedown about halfway into the first period for a 2-0 lead after one. Starting at the down position, Sasso added a point with an escape for a 3-0 lead. Another takedown made it 5-0 Sasso after two periods. Miller escaped to start the third before another Sasso takedown followed by a four-point near fall for a win by major decision, 12-1.

157 | No. 22 Paddy Gallagher (OSU) def. Kevin Schork (UMD) | TF, 22-5   

Gallagher was quick out of the gates with a quick takedown followed by a Schork escape. Another Gallagher escape made it 4-1. A two-point near fall added to the Ohio State advantage (6-1). The lead increased to 22-5 after two periods for the win by technical fall.

165 | No. 8 Carson Kharchla (OSU) def. John Martin Best (UMD) | D, 7-2

Kharchla, who has been out since early December, returned to dual competition to lead after the first period 2-0. An escape made it 3-0 Kharchla to open the second. Another takedown made it 5-0 to end the second. Kharchla finished off the match to win by decision, 7-2.

174 | Isaac Wilcox (OSU) def. Dominic Solis (UMD) | SV, 3-1

Wrestling up a weight class, Ohio State’s Wilcox fell behind 1-0 after an escape to open the second period following a scoreless first. Wilcox tied the bout at 1-all with a third-period escape. A late Wilcox takedown was overturned after both coaches disputed the call in the third. The match then went into sudden victory tied 1-all where Wilcox got the winning takedown to win by decision, 3-1.

184 | No. 5 Kaleb Romero (OSU) def. Chase Mielnik (UMD) | TF, 22-7

Romero earned a pair of quick takedowns for a 4-1 lead. After the first, Romero led 10-3. After two, Romero built a 14-5 advantage. Starting down, Romero quickly escaped and added a takedown to lead 17-5. The bout ended with a Romero win by technical fall, 22-7.

197 | No. 23 Gavin Hoffman (OSU) wins by forfeit | FF

HWT | No. 16 Tate Orndorff (OSU) def. Jaron Smith (UMD) | D, 4-1

After a scoreless first, Orndorff escaped to start the second period for a 1-0 lead. Smith tied it with an escape to open the third. Orndorff then scored the first takedown of the bout for a 3-1 lead, With a point for riding time, Orndorff won by decision, 4-1.

Brown started quick to take a 6-0 lead with a takedown and near fall early in the first. Brown then won by fall at 1:55.

Mendez led quickly 8-2 before earning the fall at 1:31 of the first.

141 | No. 18 Dylan D’Emilio (OSU) def. Kal Miller (UMD) | D, 6-3

D’Emilio won the ninth bout of the night for the Buckeyes. After leading 4-2 after two periods, He finished off the bout and the match to win by decision, 6-3.
